Dunsfold/Godalming registers - DAYMAN
« on: Tuesday 14 January 14 16:39 GMT (UK) »
If anyone has access to either or both of these parish records I would be grateful for a look up for:-

John Amos DAYMAN  born c.1815

He might be listed as Amos John Dayman as these two names interchanged at times.

Any help much appreciated

Wilma

Hi Wilma

There isn't an obvious baptism so I looked at other records such as the census.

Dayman doesn't seem to be a Surrey surname in that there are few people with the Dayman surname linked to Surrey either as a place of birth or residence.

I would infer that he may have grown up in the area and assumed that was where he came from, the reality could be that his parents moved to the area from somewhere else.

Have you got a marriage cert showing his father's name?

Thanks for looking.   I haven't got the marriage certificate.   Various websites say he was married to an Emily Taylor but could find no marriage entry in BMD index.   However on census his wife is given as Emily born in Stone, Kent 1832.    The first child I found was born in 1852.  They did move around a lot!

Thanks again  Wilma

Hi I've recently done a family tree on dayman as it's my grandmothers maiden name, traced the family to kent, my great grandfather is a dayman. If we are the same family I have gone back to 1790 France. I know there is family in England and I'd love to connect the dots, if you're names are on my tree I may be able to help!! Feel free to contact me :) Alan

There is an entry for Joseph in O'Byrne's Naval Biography dated 1849, this has his father as the late Rev. Chas Dayman, Rector at Gt Tew. I noted from the write-up that he served as Mate on HMS Erebus during her four year Arctic exploration, and as such he would have qualified for the Arctic Medal 1818-1855, in my opinion one of the most attractive medals ever produced.

To find more of his career you could purchase his service records:

Hi Alan

You should be able to use the personal message system now, you need a post count over 2. It's a built in anti-spamming device.

If not reply on the topic again and then you should be able to use it.
