Hi Wianhall,

You mention that the source of your information comes from your family bible and also that you have other information. Can you provide us with that information as well please, as it might provide some clues.

An excellent resource for those researching emigrants to Otago is Toitū Otago Settlers Museum.

I had wondered if young Donald might have emigrated to Otago in particular in search of gold, but the 'rush' triggered by the discovery of gold at Gabriel's Gully happened in May 1861, a bit early given the date of departure you provided.

Mind you, Gabriel's wasn't the first Otago 'rush', so it remains a possibility.

Wianhall  ... if you have access to ancestry.com you can view a tree for the Donald McKENZIE who died in 1871 (buried Waitati Cemetery).    [It may even be available for free viewing via the Mundia website ?]

The ancestry tree is for a ...
Donald Andrew McKENZIE - b. Alloa, Scotland 6 January 1939
Parents given as  "Andrew McKENZIE" and "Christine McINTYRE" .[/u]
This Donald McKENZIE said to have married an "Elizabeth Ursula BULL - in New York"  with a son Andrew Johnson McKENZIE b. 1871 in NZ.

Perhaps you could contact tree owner to see what supporting documents are available ?

From the book, "Blueskin Days, a History of Waitati, Evansdale, Warrington and Surrounding Districts", by Ian Church with Stuart and Jean Strachan. [Published 2007.]

References to:Andrew McKenzie who married Jane Wilson on 29.5.1862.

One of the first Waitati Valley Allotments (1861) went to Alex. McKenzie.

Andrew McKenzie listed in Wise's Otago Directory for Blueskin, 1874. Again in 1887 as a platelayer.

Same for 1894.

Maybe a connection to Donald?

I have a reference to that bible inscription which says he emigrated on the 25th of January 1861. The reference occurs in an article written by a relative of mine in the 1940s. It indicates that in fact records show Donald emigrated to NZ with his aunt Elizabeth McKenzie (nee Cock) on 26 January 1860 on the ship "Storm Cloud". There was a series of articles published in the "Alloa Circular and Hillfoots Record" around 1947 when a relative of mine tracked down much information about Elizabeth and members of her family who either emigrated to NZ or stayed in Scotland. Elizabeth and many of her family lived at Waitati after arriving at Port Chalmers.
