When all maps loaded, click on 1863 map for a view of Main Street.
When 1863 map loaded in main window click on main window (anywhere except red Enhanced Zoom box) to zoom.

The 1866 and 1900 maps also provide a detailed view.

But without being able to "walk" main street on the Census and identify possible reference points, no further forward!!

Hi Brina,

The attached photograph was printed in the July/August 2013 edition of the 'Ben Ledi View' - Callander's community newspaper.

From Google Street View, you'll see that the building facade has since changed and it now houses William Hill bookmakers and Taj Indian restaurant, with the door in the centre (showing number 23) leading to the flats upstairs.

Brilliant, this helps enormously, thank you so much.   Seems a bit strange that an ordinary gardener was living there as it looks quite a grand building.   I like the photo and I have been able to blow it up a bit.

On Ancestry it is possible to "walk" the census by using registration number / ED /household schedule number set to exact with no names.

Need to try this! With FreeCen entries, it is easy, as you just click previous/next households. Didn't know you could get close to this for Ancestry, so will have a go.

I was born in Callander. The MacEwans greengrocers shop was still there until about 1980 I think - then it became a Victoria Wine. I know that I have seen a postcard online for sale showing the front of the shop with the MacEwan family standing outside. There are a couple of storeys of flats up above.
