HOWATT / HOWIT / HAMILTON / DAVIDSON FAMILY - Govan / Barony
« on: Friday 10 January 14 12:17 GMT (UK) »
Been a while since I've been on here but I'm now back on the track of my great grandparents family and have so far established the following:

John Hamilton Howat(t) b 7/12/1805 Govan married Helen Davidson bc 1806 Barony on 25/11/1831 Barony.

i believe John descended from George Howat(t) bc 1780 Govan and Jane Hamilton bc 1870 Govan.

I have 4 children for John and Helen (based on census returns 1841/1851 checked via GenesReunited):

James bc 1832
Jane bc 1834
George bc 1837
Jane bc 1840

Experience tells me that with gaps between the above children there were probably others. I found a David Howat(t) also born 1837 who might fit but am not convinced he's the same family.

Any help establishing names, dates, places etc would be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.

Have you been able to confirm John Howatt and Helen Davidson's parents in any way?

A George Howat and Jane Hamilton look possible if this is John and some children in 1851 (sure  you have this but may help others):

Euphemia Howat 41 head - possibly this entry https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X1S2-5JM
Jane Dunn 12
Elizabeth Howat 44 sister
John Howat 42 brother https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X1WB-BHL
Jane Howat 16 niece
George Howat 14 nephew
David Howat 11 nephew

Address: Midd, Govan

Was John a widower by now?

Thanks for the info.

It's been a while since I did the original research via Scotland's People. Since moving overseas my subsription has lapsed so now relying on the various free resources available online and the almost exhausted credits I have with GenesReunited.

From what I can see, Euphemia is the sister of my GGF. I did some quick cross checking online last night via Freecen and I am as sure as I can be without seeing paper evidence that it's the same family. Thinking about the Jane Hamilton Howat b1840 and David Howat also born 1840, could they have been twins with the former perhaps not surviving?  As mother Helen doesn't appear in the 1851 census there is a suggestion she died in the period between their birth and 1851.

I know father, John was alive in 1851 as we established he was with his sister and his 3 youngest children.

In the 1841 census, Euphemia is living with their mother Jane  SCT1841/646  folio 3 Pg41 with two other Howats, Marianne and Christina, 15 and 10 respectively and Jean Dunn aged 2. The latter child also appears with the family 10 years later in 1851. Jane doesn't so I have to assume died between the censuses.

Unfortunately, freecen doesn't include later scottish censuses so I'm not sure if I can get much further forward. Any help you can give or pointers in direction would help a lot.

Again Thanks in advance.

I thought this might be John with daughter Jane in 1861:

John Howat 52 Cotton Weaver b. Govan
Jane Howat 25 daughter b. Silk Factory Work b. Govan.

Address: Old Main Street S Side, Govan

A further entry, with just a John Howatt, 65 and a cotton weaver, living alone in 1871at 111 Main St. Govan.

Possible death in 1873 in Govan for him (showing as HOWATT).

From other people's research, John and Euphemia's sister, Christina is showing as having married a Bowman Fleming Steven.  1841 entry below

Bowman Steven 28
Christina Steven 26
William Steven 8
George Steven 3
David Steven 1

Address: Harmony Row, Govan

This is the 1841 census you mention having seen?

Jane Howat 65
Euphemia Howat 28
Marianne Howat 15
Christina Howat 10
Jean Dunn 2

Address: 2nd Stair W, Govan

I am thinking that Marianne and Christina may be grandchildren perhaps? Jean Dunn we think we think is Euphemia's daughter.

Some of George Howatt and Jane Hamilton's children are showing as:

Margaret 1800 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X1S2-PK3
John 1805 - your line - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X1WB-BHL
Euphemia 1807 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X1S2-5JM
William 1810 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X1W1-L51
Christian 1814 - who may have married Bowman Stevens - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X1S2-7P1

Sorry for delay in replying had internet problems all week  >:(

Not surprisingly the more info that comes to light the more questions occur to me.

Need a little clarity of your last information.  Were Marianne and Christina sisters of Euphemia or as you suggested earlier, maybe other relatives eg grandchildren of George and Jane or perhaps nieces of Euphemia?  I thought it also interesting that Christina was born in Ireland, the only one of the family that was although I couldn't find her on Familysearch. And Jane Dunn where do I start with trying to find out how she fits in?

You stated Christina married Bowman Steven but I'm guessing that was a typo and you meant  Christian (b1814). I have tried to search the Familysearch website but their new site is nowhere near as easy to use as their old site. I can see individuals but there seems to be no way to find "households" as there was with their old search engine. Maybe I'm just not seeing the logic they want us researchers to use. I tried searching by film number but again it just lists individuals and there seems to be no way to discover the "relationships".  I can't even find the Christian/Bowman marriage on there. Frustrating to say the least.

I guess I'll just have to shelve my research on this line until such time I can resubscribe to Scotland's people. Thanks for all your help.

Christian and Christina are first name variants so often girls with these names would show as either name such as:

Hi,
I am a direct descendant of George Howatt (Howitt/Hewitt) and his wife Jane/Jean Hamilton
through their youngest child Christina who married Bowman Fleming Steven. I researched the family some years ago, but as yet have not put all the info. together. George and Jane had 10 children most of whom died young. Their children were all born and baptised in Govan. They are as follows:
1. Janet baptised 4/4/1795
2. John baptised 22/11/1796 died pre 1805
3. David baptised 7/7/1798 died 11/2/1841 Govan (soldier)
4. Margaret born 1/4/1800
5. George born 20/5/1802
6. Elizabeth born 29/3/1804
7. John born 7/12/1805
8. Euphemia born 9/12/1807
9. William 16/6/1810
10. Christina (Christian) born 28/2/1814

Christina Howitt and Bowman Fleming Steven had 12 children (8 sons and 4 daughters) My great great grandfather David Howatt Steven (born 1840) was one of their sons. He migrated to Australia in approx. 1865. He married and had 10 children.

John Howatt who was married to Helen/EllenDavidson in 1831 had the following known children:

James b. 1832
Jane b. 2/1/1835
George b. 27/2/1837
David b. 5/6/1840

James Howatt born 1832 migrated to QLD Australia in the 1850's. He married Annie Charleson on 1/5/1858 and they had 10 children. He was a ships engineer and died on 27/4/1885 at his home in Grey St, South Brisbane.

Hope this helps. Look forward to hearing from you. Jen
