Thanks again for the link, but I reckon that even descendants of the aristocracy would be considered officer material.  Horst on the other hand was an ordinary soldier who during the insurgence into Russia, just carried the base plate for a heavy duty mortar on his back.

there will be always people for every nobility-name who not belong to the nobilities but have the same name without "von".  8)

Horst Ponikau was born in Germany in 1921, served in the army, became a professional ice skater and in European skating circles was jokingly called 'Mr Minagery'  (Horse-Pony-Cow).

I recognize the last name - was he related to the Ponikau's involved in skating in Nova Scotia?
