1841, Newcastle upon Tyne COMPLETE

I have found my 4th Great Grand Father living in Newcastle upon Tyne in the 1841 at Victoria Place,St John, Newcastle upon Tyne, despite living in Newcastle I have had no success finding where that is, I believe it was near Westgate Road.

More information or ideally a map would be great

If you are looking at it on ancestry try the first page in the record set and that should give you the description of the enumeration district. (I don't know how to see the description on FindMyPast, sorry)

Victoria Place, as far as I can tell, was in Enumeration District 15 and the description for that says it covered:

Orchard Court Southern side of Postern Western side of Westgate Street from corner of Postern Western side of Clavering Place Hanover Square and that part of Hanover Street which lies in the Parish of St John

Whoever wrote it obviously hadn't heard of punctuation :-)

Most of the places mentioned can be found on Google Maps, so you should be able to work out the general area, though Victoria Place no longer appears to exist.

It's apparently in Shieldfield?

Sorry to have to say that Shieldfield is an entirely different location to the one in question here. I'm guessing given the date 1841, that the Victoria Square in St John's was probably lost under the site of the Newcastle Railway Station. I haven't managed to find a map of the correct era with sufficient detail to prove it's exact location. Westgate Street as mentioned in the Enumerator's description is where Neville Street is today, or there abouts, give or take a few yards.

The journey of the Enumerator took us via Clavering Place, Victoria Place and Hanover Square. Clavering and Hanover still exist! The buildings still have name boards on them.

Victoria Place has now gone, but this is definitely the location of it, no doubt somewhere under the demolition sites. I wonder though, if, the middle building between Clavering and Hanover was Victoria? Most interesting.
