Census Statistics
« on: Friday 03 January 14 23:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I found a local history book which listed the number of houses inhabited, number of families and number of people in each townland in the 1841 Census. Unfortunately, it did not list the source. Is this information available for other census years also? If so, how can I access this information?
Thanks

Once a census was taken the population details (such as you've found) were extracted and this material (I think for all years) survives. National Library of Ireland probably has details but could be available in other places as well (my very small local library has them for the immediate area in a local history folder). Have also found some bits online. Are you are looking for a particular townland/area?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

All of this data is available in reports at www.dippam.ac.uk.

As far as I remember, I got details of all the townlands, for censuses 1841 - 1911 in the National Archive, Dublin.
At the time, they weren't online.

I had a quick look at dippam ... does it only give 1841 and 1851?
I didn't see a townland breakdown, but I wasn't checking thoroughly.

Hi,
My local library has a document which shows the decline in population in the countryside between 1841 and 1981 of all the townlands in the parish of Dungiven, Co. Londonderry.

Regards

Correction - That should read 1831 to 1981 i.e. 150 years
Stewart, Irwin, Morrison, Haslett, Murrell - Dungiven area Co. Londonderry
Browne, Barrett -Co.Armagh
Neil, Smyth _Co. Antrim

Thank you all very much for all the replies.
I am interested mostly in County Wicklow, so will spend some time looking through the links below.
I had assumed I would have to wait to go to the National Library, so this is great news!!
