James and George Litt..Liverpool 1840s
« on: Friday 03 January 14 18:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi there and a Happy New Year to all the wonderful members of Rootschat.

I'm looking for the whereabouts of brothers George and James Litt, born to John and Jane Litt (nee Renfrew). James was baptised on 19 July 1829 in St. Peters, Liverpool whereas George was born 29 October, 1829 and baptised in St. Peters on 1 Jan 1830. There was another brother, Thomas who died in infancy. I have the two remaining boys living with there mother and new stepfather, William Clampitt, in Liverpool, in the 1841 census. George appears again in 1843 as result of a prison sentence of 3 months for theft. Problem is that I can not locate either of them after this 1843 prison record. They are not with their mother on the 1851 census. I've been unable to find a marriage, death or emigration record for either brother.

Any help is very much appreciated.

To all, a very Healthy and Happy New Year.

No, Henry, John and Jane are all full siblings. Their father was William Clampitt, who married the widow Jane Litt (nee Renfrew) in 1831 after John Litt's death in 1829. After 1841 census records showing George and James Litt living with their mother's new family, there is no record of them, except for that 1843 prison record for George.

One of the merchant navy records give a birthdate for George Litt of Liverpool: 24 October 1828. He was a steward.

Per LAN-OPC your George was born 24 October 1829. Almost certainly the same person

James was baptised on 19 July 1829

That should read 1826 per LAN-OPC:

"Baptism: 19 Jul 1826 St Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
James Litt - [Child] of John Litt & Jane
    Abode: Williamson St
    Occupation: Bookkeeper"

Hi

As others suggest, it looks like George Litt followed the well trodden path of many a Liverpool lad and headed to sea as part of the merchant navy.

First records suggest he initially went to sea in 1845, aged 15. He was an apprentice but only lasted for a year before his ticket was cancelled. Does seem that he went back to sea later however as he shows up again with his ticket reissued for voyages between 1853 - 1854. The records can be accessed via FindMyPast.
