Ah...born prior to Elizabeth's marriage to George Thomas GURNEY

This suggests to me an illegitimate birth with the father named.

ADAMSON Charles William
Father   --  Mother Elizabeth ADAMSON
At Ballan  1858  Reg#1845R

MILLS Charles William
Father John Alfred  Mother Elizabeth ADAMSON
At East Ballan  1858  1845R

The R means absolutely nothing if purchasing a certificate.  It indicates that the birth registration has been transcribed to the index twice.

Buried at Ballan Cemetery
GURNEY Alice Maude  3 Jul 1937
Ballan Cemetery Headstones 1850-1980, Register 1872-1982 Page#10

As I mentioned previously there is no headstone as the cemetery has been photographed and no GURNEY's on the database.

TROVE has some mentions

Inquest into death of child Violet Mary GURNEY (sister of William Charles), after falling into a cooking pan of hot fat. September 1869
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/89701574

There are a couple of mentions of a Mrs GURNEY as a caterer in Ballan but not specific enough to know if it's Alice.

In memoriam notice for 'my dear mother Alice M GURNEY' inserted by "Annie" The notice is on p18 not p6 which is what came up for me. (I see now that cupoflife has already given this reference  :-[ )

There is a digitised WW1 record for
Harold GURNEY Born - Ballan VIC : Occ: farmer
Place of Enlistment - Melbourne VIC :
Next of Kin - (Mother) GURNEY Alice

The fact that his mother is named NoK is unusual if his father is still alive.  However there is no notation and, as he returned from o/seas and collected his own medals there would not have been a need for the Army to contact his mother.

William GURNEY; age 29; born - Ballan, is also listed on the NAA site but there does not seem to be a file for him.

Hi there,

My name is Christopher, but my middle names are William Owen Gurney, I was named after my great grandfather, son of William and Alice.

Just thought I would say hello!

Did you want to go further back?

These look like Alice's parents - all in Victoria

Death 1912 #5370
Annie HANDY, 85, b abt 1827
Death Place:   D Lead, Victoria
Parents; West Edwd,    Annie Dobson

Annie is buried at Ballarat Cemetery, Presbyterian section, date of burial 1 June 1912
http://ballaratcemeteries.com.au/php/search.php

Can't see a death for an Owen or Andrew HANDY; someone with better resources might find it.

Annie HANDY, hd, is on the 1903 electoral roll living at Durham (Vic).  No others of that surname at that adress.
1909 Annie HANDY, pensioner, "Napoleons" , District: Ballaarat, Subdistrict: Sebastopol
