There are a couple of mentions of a Mrs GURNEY as a caterer in Ballan but not specific enough to know if it's Alice.

In memoriam notice for 'my dear mother Alice M GURNEY' inserted by "Annie" The notice is on p18 not p6 which is what came up for me. (I see now that cupoflife has already given this reference  )

The fact that his mother is named NoK is unusual if his father is still alive.  However there is no notation and, as he returned from o/seas and collected his own medals there would not have been a need for the Army to contact his mother.

William GURNEY; age 29; born - Ballan, is also listed on the NAA site but there does not seem to be a file for him.

Annie HANDY, hd, is on the 1903 electoral roll living at Durham (Vic).  No others of that surname at that adress.
