Sparkhall or Sparkhill, Torphichen?
« on: Sunday 29 December 13 19:29 GMT (UK) »
Bit of a long shot, but am researching my Forsyth ancestors from late 1770s and I have one, a James Forsyth, who is listed as residing at a place called Sparkhall (or Spark Hall) or Sparkhill (or Spark Hill) in or near Torphichen.

Has anyone heard of this place? Or was it perhaps a house or property of some kind?

I have checked the relevant maps on the NLS site but can't seem to find anything. If anyone has any local knowledge, I'd be most grateful.

Many thanks.

Hi Dashboard,

I can find an area of Torphicen called Slackend and Slackend Hill. There are some older properties in this area, so maybe worth researching here.

Thanks, Tom.

Yes, I saw that too. I wondered whether it might just be it. I'll try and dig deeper.

Many thanks again for your help.

I've not done any research for about 15 years and haven't got my notes, but I too came across Sparkhall relating to J Forsyth.
As far as I remember, it was a farm and I seem to recall that James (or his wife) was a farm servant.
My memory could have jumped a few generations, but I think the wife's surname was Walkinshaw.
As I said, that's sketchy recall from about 15/20 years ago, so apologies if I've thrown in a red herring.
