All Saints West Bromwich parish register lookup for MALLIN marriage
« on: Saturday 28 December 13 21:05 GMT (UK) »
William Mallin married a woman named Elizabeth, probably in 1796, and probably in All Saints, West Bromwich.  Elizabeth was born in 1775, her first child was born in August 1797, and all of her children were baptized in All Saints.  I have checked the bishop's transcripts for All Saints and did not find any marriage record.  I do not have access to a microfilm of the parish register, which may have entries for marriages that are missing from the BTs.  It would be a bit of work, I know, but I would be grateful if someone could check whether a marriage record for this couple exists in the parish register.  I am especially keen to learn Elizabeth's maiden name, so that I can begin tracing her family.

For what it's worth, William was from West Bromwich, and the 1841 census says that Elizabeth was born in Staffordshire.  I have checked the International Genealogical Index for all marriages of a William Mallin and a woman named Elizabeth, and found nothing reasonable anywhere in England for the 1790s.  So I think it likely that they did in fact get married in All Saints, and am hoping that the PR has the record.

cheers,
Dale

Good Afternoon
I'm surprised no one has done this ,but the Library was shut until last Monday.
I'll be honest I haven't gone to Smethwick and donethe microfilm either but I have checked a on-line transcription and the BMSGH cd rom and no marriage .
There is a William Mallin to a Mary Beetenson 14.7.1783 at All Saints witnesses Joseph Beetenson and John Perkins.
Could William have been married before, there is an age gap between the couple?
The Mallin family do seem to come from the Greets Green ,Great Bridge area and I'd try St Martin's Tipton.
Have found a burial at Christ church 26.3.1855 age 83 for a William Mallin from George St.
and I'm sure you've got the baptism 14.6.1772 to Isaac and Sarah.
Burial Isaac Mallinn 5.12.1826 A/S age 78 Greets Green
and Sarah 17.7.1822 age 74 Greets Green.
I'd also like to point out a baptism for a Lucy Mallen 29.1.1786 at West Bromwich to William and Elizabeth Mallen so they may have married earlier.

I have William Mallin's bible, and in it he names only the one wife, Elizabeth, so I don't think he was married before.  As he was born in 1772, children born in the 1780s to anyone with the same name are probably not his.  But it could complicate matters to know that there was another couple in the same parish with the same name.

I noticed that freereg.org says that they have transcribed the marriage registers for All Saints, West Bromwich starting in 1795, but I could not find any marriage for William and Elizabeth using their search engine.  Freereg says that the register is in bad shape and hard to read, so I suppose that one of the illegible entries could be for William and Elizabeth.  It's too bad to hear this about the register, because so much of my family was from that parish!

I have searched Tipton St Martin using freereg, the IGI, and the newer databases at familysearch.org and not found anything.  In fact I searched those databases for someone named William Mallin marrying a woman named Elizabeth anywhere in England during the 1790s, and didn't find anything that looked reasonable.

I recently discovered that the All Saints WB register was never microfilmed by the Mormon church.  They only copied the bishop's transcripts, which I've already checked.  I still suspect that William and Elizabeth got married in All Saints, but if the register is illegible, I won't be able to prove it using that source.  Do you happen to know whether the banns registers survive?

I do think the Christ Church burial record that you found is that for my ancestor, and I think you probably have the right burial records for his parents, too.

happy new year,
Dale

Some of the other church records are poor quality and the equipment is n't brill. Even using a magnifying glass as well does n't help. The later ones I looked at of  all saints  for my own purpose were n't bad. I transcribe for Freereg but I did n't do all saints but know the early ones are poor. One of the people i know at least who did the all saints is a very experienced transcriber. You also need to be able to gain access to the original registers! Also need to be able to take photos with a digital camera particularly if quality is poor. I 'll leave the rest to your imagination.

I was wrong that William and Elizabeth got married in All Saints West Bromwich.  It was in a neighboring parish, but it was perhaps the only neighboring parish whose marriage records were not in any online index, which explains why I couldn't find the record for so long.  Recently some of the 18th century marriages for St Mary Handsworth came online in FreeREG, and that is where William Mallin and Elizabeth Withers were married 6 Nov 1796.  (The IGI only has marriages from this parish from 1811-1837)
