Help finding relatives on 1901 census
« on: Thursday 26 December 13 20:21 GMT (UK) »
I am hoping someone can help me with this?

Can't find Great Grandmother and Great Aunt in the 1901 census, I can find them in the 1891 and 1911 census.

GGGrandmother died in 1895.  At that time they were called Queen.  When Great Grandmother and Aunt resurfaced in the 1911 census their name had changed to Quinn.  We think there was a chance they ended up in an orphange, or they were farmed out to another family.

Great Grandmother - Annie Mort Scotland Queen (Quinn) DOB 04/06/1888
Great Aunt - Janet McCallum Queen (Quinn) DOB 13/04/1890

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Rootschat  :) are the two girls with Scotland grandparents in Govan in 1891 by any chance? If so, Annie Queen age 3 and Jessie Queen age 1 (Jessie and Janet are interchangeable).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Yes that's them, the family lived with the grandmother until the mother died in 1895 as that is the address on her death certificate.

There is a possibility that the father worked on the cargo ships and that they went into a home or orphanage.  Have tried different variations of the names but have not found them.

Thanks

Marina

Hi Marina

This may be Ann and Janet in 1901:

Ann Quinn, 11, and also, Janet Quinn, 9 both b. Glasgow. Showing as inmates at the Catholic Orphanage for Girls, 570 Gallowgate, Glasgow (Calton area).

Not sure where you are based, both you may want to search for poor relief applications and records that may have survived relating to the girls/family. They can be invaluable in terms of personal info if you can find any for them.

Hi

We have been to Mitchell Library and could not find them until they were adults and we do not have any family information as they did not talk about their childhood.  I have spoken to my Uncle who knew them best but he could tell me very little.

That is probably them in the orphange how did you find that information out as I have tried the Scotlands People site with the various variations on their name and it did not come up?   I must have went wrong somewhere.

Thanks for you help

Marina

Hi Marina

Pity about no poor relief records/apps for them...but at least you know you tried going down that route.

There is one entry showing on SP for an Ann Quinn aged 11 and also a Janet Quinn aged 9, both in Calton, which match what is showing on the transcript for that census that I have looked at.

Likely their ages that show a little younger may have been a problem on the search?
