Hoping to find the Mysterious Woman
« on: Monday 23 December 13 02:51 GMT (UK) »
I am looking please for a lady who was a dancer in  England around 1916,this lady married a soldier in Staffordshire, and returned to New Zealand with her husband Harries Wade Brown, she was in New Zealand for 5 months with her husband ,far from home with no other family to speak of.
It seems that Harries was a bit of a scoundrel and always getting into trouble on the base and was in the caboose alot,so was forbidden to leave, this may have been grounds for her to return to England.
She may have returned and gone back to her profession of dancing, this isnt known to be confirmed.
In 1921 ,she would have become a widow because Harries[known as Harry] died.
It isnt known if she remarried,or when she returned to England she may have been expecting a child this is just a theory as nothing has been confirmed ,at this point its just heresay.
The lady that i am looking for please is  JESSIE ELSIE SHARPLES OF STAFFORD,STAFFORDSHIRE.
Please if anyone can solve this puzzle of this mysterious woman ,as every turn there is nothing to find.
I would so dearly like to know about this lady.
I would like to know did she dance in the theatre/with a group/or alone [say in a nightclub or something] did she entertain the soldiers etc
Thank you earnestly so much [ and have a terrific holiday and a nice and safe one into next year]

It appears that Harries and Jessie werent living together at the time of his death.

Auckland Star, Volume LIII, Issue 165, 14 July 1922

COMPENSATION CLAIM.
WIDOW AWARDED £021. Reserved judgment has been delivered by the Arbitration Court in the claim by Jessie Elsie Brown, of Auckland, against Mary Catherine Loveridge, of Maungaturoto. baker. The claim, which was heard at the last sitting of the Court here, was for £G"2l 2/, compensation for the death of the plaintiff's husband whilst, employed driving a baker's cart for the defendant. The    defence was that by reason of the fact that Brown was living apart from his wife plaintiff was entitled to be treated as a partial dependent only and not a total dependent, as alleged. The Court gave judgment for the full amount claimed, with costs. Mr. Hogg (instructed by Mr. K. X. Browne) appeared for plaintifi" and Mr. Singer for defendant.

Hi her departure would seem to be:-

Jessie ELISE Brown 22 Married address in UK 231, Oxford Gardens Stafford on the 24th July 1919 Plymouth to Wellington on SS Athenic

They married Dec qtr 1918 Stafford 6b 37 (But Jessie has been transcribed as Jessie H Sharples)

EDIT I have just viewed again the original passenger list and it looks like Jessie filled in the information herself as her signature is at the bottom ( It is all in the same hand) so she appears to use the middle name ELISE.
Also Jessie was travelling 3rd class.

I wonder if she is Jessie Alice Sharples born 1900, Stafford. Parents are Thomas and Mary Ellen.
