Horman in Stamford
« on: Sunday 19 June 05 07:22 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to locate any information (records) on  James Horman married to Isabella (Hill) Ellis.  They owned a beer shop in Stamford Lincolnshire, had 3 children including one son, James, that died in August 1833.

James was transported to Tasmania Australia in 1837 and Isabella and her two children went to the Stamford Workhouse.

I do not know whether James and Isabella married in Stamford or were born in Stamford.  Any information would be appreciated.

Cheers
Lisa

Hello Lisa

Going on my family records James and Isobella (nee Ellis) were indeed married in Stamford.  James was transported to Tasmania for receiving Stolen Pigs (Convict No. 2013) and arrived on 10/12/1835.  He was a Boatswain on the journey and received a good report from the Medical Officer for assistance.  After serving his sentence he became the licencee of the Freemason Hotel in Hobart.  By all accounts James was the first Horman to settle in "The Colony".  The only other information I have is that his son William arrived on the 'Barque' 'Derwent" on the 29/11/1845.

The Horman family farmed in the Channel Isles in their early years of settlement.

Don't know if that is what you are after but I would love to know the info you have on the Hormans etc..

Kate (Melbourne Victoria)

Hi Kate
I have a bit of info on the Hormans that I would be happy to share with you including photo of Isabella and William.
I was in Stamford last May and walked in the beer shop that they owned.  I will be in Stamford again next month.  (Seems to have become a pilgrimmage)

I would be happy for you to contact me offline though not sure how we do that. Do I need to put my email address in a post?

Regards
Lisa

Hi Lisa
Read your post re Hormans in Stamford, I am researching James and Isabella Horman and got info from this forum.  I would appreciate any more information you have.  I am in Australia and have been chasing my tail searching.  I am going to Tasmania next year and hope to get more information there re James Horman and his family and convict connections.

Glenda

I am researching the Horman family for Gwenyth Crosbie nee Joy whose great-great-grandfather was James Horman who was transported to Tasmania in 1835. Gwenyth who was born in Victoria, Australia, is descended from William his son who emigrated to be with his father.  I am new at using the chat room and a bit at sea and hope I am making contact and would appreciate help so that I can share my research.
