Looking for Sarah Turner born 1815, Essex, England
« on: Tuesday 17 December 13 07:06 GMT (UK) »
I am currently looking for information about the parents & siblings of Sarah Turner who was born in 1815 in Essex - possibly Sandford in Essex?

She married James Newling in 1836 at Ickleton, Cambridgeshire & later emigrated to Australia with her husband & 5 living children in 1854 under a assisted migrant scheme.  The family settled in Scone, NSW.

I have James' ancestors but have no information on Sarah's parents.  Her death certificate lists her parents as unknown. If anyone could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you
Vicki

Looking at the scan of the 1851 census, Sarah's place of birth looks more like Samford, this could be a mis spelling of Sampford short for Great Sampford. There is a Sarah Turner baptised at Great Sampford on 18 June 1815 at Gt Sampford on Family search - parents William and Anne. A William and Anne appear on 1851 census at Gt Sampford with several children. Although that Anne's age is given as 51 making her only 15 when Sarah was born. Possible but seems slightly unlikely. Maybe a second wife with same christian name as first. On 1841 census she's listed as 35, whereas William is 50 (as expected given rounding rules)

Just looked at William Turner marriages in Gt Sampford on family search. There is a marriage with Ann Peacock in 1813 and an "intended marriage" listed in 1839 with Ann Green. In 1841 census the children are Stephen age 15 and Eliza age 1, so it looks like two marriages both to an Ann. Ann #2 wasn't born in Gt Sampford so I expect that the marriage took place in her parish, and the intended marriage is another way of saying reading the Banns.

Ann Turner buried Gt Sampford 20 July 1831, so this would be Ann nee Peacock, Sarah's mother

Hi Vicki,

James and Sarah arrived as bounty immigrants and so there is a reasonable amount of information on their immigration record.

Tantivy arrived NSW 7 Sep 1854

List of Immigrants as Inspected by the Immigration Board

James NEWLING
aged 42
Farm Labourer
Native Place: Eckleton, Cambridge
Parents: John and Maria, father residing at Eckleton
Religion: Dissenter
Read and Write: Can Read
No relatives in the Colony

Sarah NEWLING
aged 38
Native Place: Sanford or Samford, Essex
Parents: Wm and Anne TURNER, father residing at Sanford/Samford
Religion: Dissenter
Read and Write: Can Read
No relatives in the Colony

Noah, 17, Farm Labourer
Anne, 11
Frances, 11
Susan, 8
Eliza, 6

All the children have Eckleton as their native place, Noah can read and all the girls can read and write.  Religion etc. is the same as parents.

State of bodily health, strength and usefulness is 'Good' for all of them and they had no complaints about the voyage.  James has a comment against his name which ends "...under the A. I. Act", I think he might have been a bit old and had to pay extra?

Thanks Debra

I had the name of the ship they arrived on so I don't know why I didn't think to look there.

That definitely helps & confirms the info from Sharon.

Thanks again.
