Minsterworth burials
« on: Monday 16 December 13 15:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Would anyone out there know where families who lived in Minsterworth during the 19th and early 20th century might be buried? I visited the church there last year but couldn't see any family names on the headstones there, just wondered if there were other churches/cemeteries locally that may have been used?
Thanks
Gaynor

Hi Gaynor,
I am a member and volunteer at Glos Archives (GA) and I have checked the St Peter, Minsterworth burial records. GA website indicates that the following records are held:-
1813-1859, PFC 218 IN 1/8 1
1860-1898, PFC 218 IN 1/8 2
If you care to give me a surname, I'll do a lookup for you. The 20th Century records are probably
also held.
I shall be in GA tomorrow, Tuesday, and next Saturday.

Hi Victor

Thank you that would be great. The surname is Mitchell, specifically Thomas and Hannah who died in 1912 and 1921 and also Charles and Ann who died in 1887 and 1857. They all lived in Minsterworth. If you need any more details let me know.
Look forward to hearing from you!

Hi Gaynor

A very good site for parish register transcripts is The Forest of Dean Family History Trust http://www.forest-of-dean.org.uk/ free to use once you've registered.  There are a number of Mitchell burials in Minsterworth, however not all graves have headstones. There's a Charles Mitchell buried in Minsterworth 1880, also a Charles Mitchell buried 1887 Westbury on Severn. Ann buried 1857, Thomas buried 1912 both Minsterworth.

Regards
Keziah  :)

Morning Keziah

Thanks for that, I did wonder about the headstones as they weren't a rich family so maybe just couldn't afford them? Guess I must have walked past them when I was there then. I think Hannah may also be buried at Westbury, would have expected them to all be at the same location but knowing the family history scene I guess we should never assume anything!

Hi Gaynor,
Source: Glos Archives (GA) PFC 218 IN 1/8 1, St Peter, Minsterworth, Burials:-
Ann MITCHELL of Minsterworth buried 4th December 1857, aged 46.
No sign of Charles MITCHELL so I checked the 1881 Census and found Charles MITCHELL with a 2nd wife, Louisa (nee CLEMENTS & HOULE, her 2nd marriage) at the Travellers Rest, Westbury-on-Severn, occupation Beer House Keeper. The Travellers Rest, still exists and is located just outside the village. I then checked the Westbury-on-Severn burial records.
Source: GA, PFC 354 IN 1/17 1, St Peter & St Paul, Westbury-on-Severn, Burials:-
Charles MITCHELL of Westbury buried 16th April 1887, at Wesbury-on-Severn, aged 76.
Source: Gloucestershire BMD indexes:-
Charles MITCHELL married Louisa CLEMENTS/HOULE at St Nicholas, Gloucester, 1868 Gloucester 6a 447 Sep Qtr.
The burial records for St Peter, Minsterworth, post-1900, whereabouts are unknown. They are not held at GA and the vicar at St Peter & St Paul, Westbury-on-Severn, after enquiries by me, will try to find where the register is. You can follow this up at: www.wosb.org.uk.
Finally, the following publication may be of interest: A Minsterworth Miscellany by Terry MOORE-SCOTT. ISBN 978-0-9554410-1-1. Available from moorescott@fsmail.net or any on-line retail outlet.

Hi Victor

Thank you for doing that, I'm really grateful. Will have to pop into the Travellers Rest next time we're in the area!!
I actually have a copy of the book you mention, it has a wonderful photo of the Mitchell family at Pound Cottage, Minsterworth and I was put in touch with an elderly lady in the village who knew some of the family way back. She very kindly sent me an old photo of a Mrs Mitchell but unfortunately I have no idea which Mrs Mitchell she might be, the house in the picture isn't Pound Cottage so I guess she will remain a mystery!

Best Wishes

Gaynor
