CHILDREN OF MATTHEW & ELLEN CAIRNS
« on: Thursday 12 December 13 04:13 GMT (UK) »
I am researching for a friend who wants to know if Matthew & Ellen Cairns had any other children apart from Patrick (Alexander) who was born on 13 February 1901 at 11 Hill St, Ligoniel but his birth was registered in Belfast, Co. Antrim.  Also if a marriage could be found for his parents this would be a bonus.

Hope this is the right way to ask questions.

Many thanks.

Can’t immediately see a marriage that fits, though without the wife’s maiden name it’s hard to be certain. If you order the child’s birth certificate, you should get the mother’s name from that. (Belfast Jan – Mar 1901 Vol 1, page 332). Ligoniel’s a suburb of Belfast so, Belfast would be the normal place for a birth in that area to be registered.

Can’t see the family in the 1901 census.

To search for other children (assuming they aren’t in the censuses), you could contact GRONI, who keep the birth records and get them to serch for you, once you have the mother’s maiden name. (There is likely to be a fee for that).

The maiden name of the mother was Weir.  The parents names of Patrick were Matthew Cairns & Ellen Weir.

But thank you for your reply though.  Much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Here's the family in 1901 census (surname Kiernan)- I found them by browsing the 1901 census by address:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Shankhill/Hill_Street/978558/
Lots of good information there- Mathew from Co. Meath, Ellen's mother is Jane...

Checked in 1901 Belfast directory for clues but only this is listed- there's is another Hill St. near St. Ann's Cathedral just north of City Hall in the city centre.
Hill Street (No. 2) off Ligoniel Road, Ligoniel a number of small houses

Thank you ever so much for that information.   But I wonder what has happened to Ellen in the 1911 Census and also Mathew is down as single.  You have been very helpful to me and I am sure the lady I am doing this for would be very excited to have this information.

Regards

Is this Mathew in 1911? If so perhaps his employer thought he was single or perhaps he and Ellen never married?
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Meath/Julianstown/Betaghstown/713194/

Going back to child's birth certificate- exactly how is mother Ellen listed? as Ellen Cairns formerly Weir? Ellen Weir?

Wonder if this is Ellen in 1911 (as Ellen Carins)- also a 9 year old Patrick Cairns in Workhouse-search for Cairns & Carins on the page:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/St__George_s/Lisburn_Road/155677/
If so then Ellen was blind- perhaps reason she and Mathew split up.

Yes that is Ellen and Patrick in the Workhouse.  You are a genius.  How do you manage to find these people so quickly. I wouldn't have known where to look. Yes Mathew and Ellen were married but must have split.  I have since heard stories about his son Patrick who did the same thing to his wife and children, just abandoned them and put them in the Salvation Army Home here in New Zealand when his first wife died.  So Patrick took after his father in the same way.

Thank you very much for your help in this matter, very much appreciated, and my friend is so pleased as well.
