The most likely reason was that they couldn't write.
Someone else has written Mary Waring her ..... mark, and she had added the cross.

I'm wondering if its Edward John Woolford and he's spelt it wrongly?

I have seen Jhon as a shortening  for Jonathan on occasions.

It Was From 1876. Was School Around Then?
