Hmm well I was told that surnames in Ireland which had the Mc or Mac prefix indicated the person/family was not of Irish origin. Ive got some other ancestors who were the McGavestons..they added the Mc when they moved to Ireland
McGaveston - Dublin-Ireland, France, New Zealand
White - Shalden, Alton, Chawton-Hampshire
O'Donnell - New Zealand, Co Down-Northern Ireland, USA
Franklin/Fraenkel - New Zealand, Prussia
Day - Echuca, Tongala, London, Fairford-Gloucestershire
Clark/McGraw - New Zealand, Ireland, England
McMahon -Ipswich-QLD, Kiladysart-Co Clare
Smith - Ipswich, Pine Mountain, Redbank-QLD, Co Westmeath, Co Cavan-Ireland
McGuire - Redbank - QLD, Co Westmeath-Ireland
Culhane - Queensland, Ardlaghan - Co Limerick

People have been travelling back and forth between Scotland and Ireland for centuries so even though McArthur might be a 'Scottish' surname the family could have lived in Ulster for several hundred years. Don't forget that people in both countries would have gotten many of their names from the Gaelic. McArthur isn't listed but if you have a look at the origin of the names here you'll see that many come from the Gaelic 'mac' meaning 'son of.'

Update:

I will create a separate thread but via a vast number of DNA matches we now know Elizabeths parents.

James McArthur and Jane Adams from Co Tyrone.

James dies before 1864. Jane moves to Partick, Lanark, Scotland and is in the 1871 and 1881 censuses. There are quite a few siblings to Elizabeth we cant account for nor do we have baptisms. Siblings include Mary, John, James, Elizabeth, Samuel, Catherine and David.

Children born in 1832, 1847 and 1849 were baptised in Donagheady, Strabane, though their birth places differed - Leat, Tirkernaghan, and Donagheady. James was described as a carpenter at all baptisms.
