Philip VALLANCE born Brighton 1803
« on: Wednesday 04 December 13 01:10 GMT (UK) »
Philip Vallance, born Brighton 1803. D.o.b. from census records. Can't find him on FamilySearch. Looking for his parents and any siblings.  He married Frances Naylor in London in 1852. From 1865 till his death in 1897 he lived at Cobb Court, Cootham. His father may also have been Philip, and he possibly had a brother James who was a surgeon. Living in the West Midlands, I only have online records to look at, hence asking here for someone with local knowledge.

Hi the marriage was at Holy Trinity, Paddington 19th February 1852 his occupation Timber Merchant

Father Philip Vallance
Brides Father Joseph

Witnesses William Naylor Louisa Mary Naylor?

His baptism on the Non-Conformist Index records from Family Search (New Search)

Philip Vallance 13th July 1803 Brighton, Sussex Father Philip Mother Maria
Their could have been an earlier Philip to the same parents christened 14th October 1795 ( Possibly buried 17th September 1796, St Nicholas)
Their are are a few more Vallance christenings to these parents it could be that Maria was a Killick as 2 of the children have this as their middle name, I will leave for you to search, I just put in Vallance Country England, with a date range 1791-1821 Sussex, and looked for baptisms with Philip as the father!

Maybe not the correct or best way to do it, but it located Philip!

Many thanks for that. Hadn't thought to look in non-conformist. I'd seen the Killick name before and wondered if that was a connection. Great to be able to add another paragraph to my research into Philip Vallance, who was a keen amateur astronomer, with probably one of the largest collections of telescopes in the country in his lifetime. He was a great friend of James Garbett, archdeacon of Chichester, also a keen astronomer. Vallance spent his early career as a farmer and successfully plowed fields with the aid of portable windmills. Later he moved to London where he traded as a timber merchant, before retiring to Cootham and a thirty year hobby in astronomy. His residence, Cobb Court, still stands and sold recently for nearly £900,000.

Sussex Advertiser 21 Nov 1825
DIED - Mr Philip Vallance, late of the firm of Messrs John, Philip and James Vallance in his house in Hanover Court, Brighton

Morning Post, 10 Sep 1852
DEATH OF A CONTEMPORARY OF DR JOHNSON
In our (ie. the Brighton Chronicle) we noticed the death of a Mrs Phillip Vallance, late of 32 West Street. This venerable lady, who had reached her 88th year had been, during her long life, a constant resident in Brighton and was born within 2 doors of her late abode. Her father, also a native of Brighton, was many years a commander in the navy, and served under Sir Edward Hawke in the memorable battle of Mons, Conflans in the year 1729. He lies interred in Brighton Churchyard with numerous descendants. His daughter (the deceased) who became a widow in 1825 continued to reside in her native place, in full possession of her health and strength , until within a few months of her death. She remembered and often spoke of seeing Dr Johnson with Mr and Mrs Thrale, promenading on the Steine, as well as the celebrated and beautiful Sarah Lennox, afterwards Bunbury, and later Napier. She died in London, after 5 day's illness of English cholera surrounded by her family, and to all appearances wholly free from pain or anxiety".

Age 88 at death fits the Maria Fayres Killick identified by keyboard88.

Thank you, so pleased to have had such an immediate response. It all appears to be coming together as the couple you name are most certainly the parents of Philip born 1803.

Correction - the battle of "Mons, Conflans" was 1759, not 1729.
