Re: marriage at Kea, Cornwall
« on: Tuesday 03 December 13 09:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Can anybody help me determine Ann's baptism?

I've got her marriage from the IGI website - Anthony Cornish and Ann Pascoe 3rd Feb 1819 at Kea. But this doesn't give details of her native parish, or any witnesses.  I assume kea was her native parish?

From census info she was born c1797 in Kea.
In 1841 she was living in Baldue, Kea, Cornwall.
In 1851 she was living in Wheal Widden, Baldue, Kea, Cornwall.
In 1861 she was living in Baldue, Kea, Cornwall.

There are the following possible baptisms from IGI:

14 Jun 1795, Gwennap, daughter of John and Ann
13 Sep 1797, Gwennap, daughter of John and Miriam
4 Oct 1797, Truro, daughter of James and Catherine
6 nov 1800, Gwennap, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth

Not sure if any of the above were born in Kea or not.

Any help or thoughts appreciated.

Regards,

Edward.

Have you looked at the Cornwall opc site?

The marriage is transcribed and gives names of witnesses.  There is also a possible burial for Ann in 1863 aged 60.

Parishes quoted on marriage records are where the person was living at the time of the marriage!
This may, or may not, be where they were born ;D

There is a possible baptism at Gwennap (close to Kea):
13th September 1897
Ann Pascoe  daughter of John & Miriam Pascoe
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Are you sure that according to the census she was born about 1797?

In 1841 I can see her with Anthony and children in Kea aged 35. This would indicate that she was between 35 and 40 taking into account the rounding down.

In 1851 the only one I have found so far as in Ilsington Devon aged 45. She is a visitor in the household of John and Jane Anthony.

In 1861 I can see an Ann in Kea aged 56. She is a widow.

These suggest a later birth date of about 1805.  Or am I looking at the wrong lady?

The Cornwall OPC    gives the witnesses as a John Cornish and a John Martin,  The groom    signed his name ,  Ann  made  her  mark  ,   both  residing  in Kea  , other than that   the  details  are as on the  IGI    that's  been mentioned

Hi,

Ann appears in census's as I've previously mentioned living in Baldhu.

Her provided age varies, with birth date from 1801 to 1806, but I take these ages with a pinch of salt.
Her first child was born 1819 so I assume her true birth to be some time between 1795 and 1803.
This is why I detailed the baptisms in this date range around the Kea area.  The OPC site unfortunately doesn't give details of birthplace only the parish.

Of note, she gave her place of birth in 1851 as Gluis Cornwall.  I have no idea where this place is in Cornwall and can find on map.  It does clearly say Gluis on the census though.
Does anyone know where Gluis is?

Regards,

Edward

The Ann Cornish on the 1841 census is aged 85?
She is living with Almond Cornish, aged 75.

HO107; Piece: 147; Book: 12; Folio: 21; Page: 7

Or is this the wrong woman?
At age 85, she would have been in her 60's when the first child was born in 1819?!

Anthony and Ann Cornish, (as married 1819) living Baldhu in 1841 as already mentioned.

Almond and Ann are different people.

The 1851 census clearly says Gluis, not St. Gluvias.  Is Gluis a common abbreviation for St. Gluvias?
