Old Occupation
« on: Sunday 24 November 13 18:49 GMT (UK) »
I have an ancestor that in 1841 was living in Staffordshire.  I have spent some time trying to decipher his occupation but to no luck.  Could anyone work this out for me?

Agree - Shoe m[aker] ap[prentice].

m was the standard abbreviation for maker, and ap for apprentice. Here's the instructions to the enumerator http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~framland/census/1841directions.htm

Make that 3 votes for Shoe m ap - Shoe maker apprentice

I'm wondering if this William Woolley is in any way related to the Harry Woolley who married Mary Ann Stone in 1886 in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire?

Firstly thank you for your replies that has clarified a few things.  Not sure if it is the same person but can not fathom anything else out so will park this for now.

My William Woolley was born on 15 Aug 1827 in Dunstall, Staffordshire and he died in April 1878.  His parents I believe were William Woolley and Jane though I need to now go to Staffordshire to find out lots more as there is no parish records for these areas online.  William married Harriet Simnett on 19 Feb 1849 at Tattenhill, Staffordshire where they had Henry (1855-1931), Eliza Ann (1858-), William (1860-1938), Abraham (1863-1917) and my direct ancestor Louisa Woolley (1865-1955). Does that tie into any of your ancestors?

Hi cfbrown:

Thank you for replying. At first look I don't think there is a connection. I've never looked much at Harry Woolley since my connection is through Mary Ann Stone who was a half-sister to my grandmother (they had the same mother but different fathers).

The Harry Woolley who married Mary Ann Stone was born in Hatton, Derbysh in 1864 and died in 1938 (I think). They married in 1886 and had five children Harry/Henry (1888?), Mary Ann (1888), Alice M (1893), George Thomas (1895-1976), and Samuel J. Baden (1902-1963). The family lived in Winshill/Burton-on-Trent for most of their lives.

It's been a while since I've looked at the Woolley/Stone connection so I'll do some searching and see where it leads.

….and thanks GS - as they say, "Hope springs eternal"
