Identify Hussars Uniform
« on: Saturday 23 November 13 09:13 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I am trying to identify what hussars regiments my gf served in between 1919 and 1929.
I know that he was in the 3rd King's Own Hussars in 1925 and when he left 1929.

His service record shows that he served in the following places:
12/08/1919 - 30/11/1920  Home   (1 year 111 days)
01/12/1920 - 12/10/1923  Rhine Army   (2 years 316 days)
13/10/1923 - 04/02/1924  Home   (115 days)
05/02/1924 - 09/10/1927  Egypt   (3 years  247 days)
10/10/1927 - 11/12/1928  India   (1 year 63 days)
12/12/1928 - 16/12/1928  Home   (15 days)

Hi Phil

If you have his service record it should give all the regiments he served with. The last photograph appears to have the 20th Hussars badge. If you have the originals you may be able to read the shoulder titles on the middle two. For cavalry these tend to be a number followed by H, L, etc.

I have information that the 3rd Hussars served in the army of occupation in Turkey from November 1921 to August 1923 when they moved to Egypt. They also moved to India in 1926. So he may have served in a different regiment for a time. One problem is that my 'stations' refer to where the CO was, and it is possible that the regiment was split into squadron detachments.

If you follow some links here you may find someone who can tell you more - http://www.nam.ac.uk/research/famous-units/3rd-kings-own-hussars

Near the bottom is a link to their museum,

Ken

Hello Ken,

Thanks for your info, I've read the page on your link - very interesting.

I do have his 'Certificate of Service' which does have quite a lot of information but only names the 3rd Hussars on his 'Final Assessments of Conduct & Character on Leaving the Colours'. On the 1st page it says Corps for which Enlisted: 'Corps of Hussars of the Line'. On his service record is just has Hussars and where it describes which corps he is being transferred from, to the reserves, it states 'Corps of the Cavalry'.

Good evening,

The 2nd and 3rd photo's look to me to be the 15th Hussars. I would agree with the 20th Hussars for the last and the first is definitely the 3rd Hussars.

Thank you John,

I wondered if he had been in the 20th Hussars or 14/20th after they merged and then transferred to the 3rd. I did see this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20th_Hussars
It doesn't have a citation but would explain his transfer to the 3rd... What do you think?

Good evening Phil,

That would certainly seem likely, not 100% sure but would say that fits with the uniform dates. I never realised that only about 33% of the 20th went on too amalgamation with the 14th.
