Thanks for replies, seems I spoke too soon ...... it's the pin from the socket that had come out. A future problem I think! Thanks anyway. 
Not good news. Even if the actual connector is not expensive, the work of stripping the laptop to fit a new one is not a job for the novice and if your laptop is still in warranty then it's a job better left to the experts I'm afraid.
