1861 Census Lookup - Kilmarnock
« on: Friday 17 June 05 23:37 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for the following family in Kilmarnock, Ayreshire in 1861:

Robert Carson Born Abt. 1821.  Age 40.
Mary Carson (nee Mason) Born 13 Jun 1822 Barony, Glasgow, Lanarkshire.  Age 38.

Their children:
Robert Carson age approx. 19.
Elizabeth Carson age approx. 16.
Mary Carson age approx. 13.
John Carson age approx. 11.
James Carson Born 14 Nov 1856 Kilmarnock, Ayreshire, age 4.
Thomas Carson Born 28 Nov 1859 Kilmarnock, Ayreshire, age 1.

Special thanks to Liz (capricorn) for giving me details of James Carson's siblings.  The older 4 children were probably born in Calton, Glasgow as this is where they lived in 1851.
Searching for the following:

Carson (Glasgow & Poplar)
Hudson, Phillimore & Stevens (Whitchurch Area, Hampshire)
Huntley & Lawrence (Hitchin, Hertfordshire)
Jervis (India & Staffordshire)
Johnson (North Hertfordshire & Poplar)
Powell (Topsham, Devon & Essex)

Hello Lawrehoo,

Your Carson, family in Kilmarnock, 1861, census index.

Carson Robert, age 40y, born Glasgow,
Carson Mary, age 38y, born Old Monkland,
Carson Elizabeth, age 17y, born Glasgow,
Carson Mary, age 13y, born Kilmarnock,
Carson John, age 10y, born Glasgow,
Carson Sarah, age 7y, born Kilmarnock,
Carson James, age 4y, born Kilmarnock,
Carson Thomas, age 1y, born Kilmarnock.

I know it looks like they moved twice from Glasgow, and Kilmarnock, because Mary's birth is stated as Kilmarnock, but that could be a transcription error.

Regards,
Jonn.

Hello, Lawrehoo:
Your Robert Carson (married to Mary Mason) was the brother of my GG Grandfather, James. Their father was Robert Carson b. prox. 1781 in Ireland. He was a muslin weaver. He was 60 in the 1841 census of Shettleston, Barony Parish. Robert Jr. was present at the time of the census (Jun 7, 1841). In this census, Robert Sr. was living with his young, second wife, Charlotte (nee Ferguson).
The first wife of Robert Sr. and mother of Robert Jr. and James, was Sarah Creaton/Crichton/Creighton. They married in Calton, Barony Parish on July 4, 1806 in St. Andrews on the Green in Glasgow. Sadly, I am unable to find additional information about Sarah. I have not located other children that Robert and Sarah may have had.
My GG Grandfather, James was born prox. 1817-1820 in Shettleston. He was a calico (block) printer. He moved to Kilmarnock and became a grocer with his second wife, Elizabeth Caldwell. The first wife of James was Mary Brown. She may have died soon after the birth of their daughter, Mary.
If you need additional information, let me know.
I have often wondered (and have tried to research) where Robert Sr. was born in Ireland, I'm fairly convinced he was from Northern Ireland since quite a number of Irish weavers moved to and lived in Calton in the late 1700's and early 1800's. The quest is probably futile, though, since there are far more Carsons than I ever expected in Ireland and Scotland!
Regards,
Shirley C.
