Trying To Locate Grandfathers Grave in Dedham, Boston
« on: Monday 18 November 13 15:17 GMT (UK) »
I am wondering if anyone can help me. I am trying to locate a Sidney Hill that died approx 1924 and whom would have been born 1867 in England. His death was registered in Dedham, Massachusettes, USA. He worked as an Engineer in the Royal Navy/Marines and I believe that he could possibly have been my Great Grandfather and I need to locate his Grave to access information pertaining to it to prove that this particular Sidney Hill was indeed my Great Grandfather. I have contacted the one Funeral Home which apparently would have been in operation and open at this particular time in Dedham and they have checked Records and cant find a Sidney Hill whom died at around this time. They thought it possible that he was taken to Boston which apparently isn't far away and arrangements and burial could have taken place there. I also contacted the main Cemetary in Dedham and the man that runs it, kindly checked records and drew a blank, although he also recommended my searching Boston as a good possibility. Although he seemed to also think it a possibility, that there could have been other Funeral Homes in Dedham which are now no longer open, where arrangements could have been made through and also that he could have been buried elsewhere. Anyways at this point I don't know what to do next. Boston is search a huge City, where do I start?! Perhaps I need to find Funeral Homes open at this time also in Boston, as well as Cemetarys. Anyone has any advice or info on whom to contact next, would appreciate it greatly. Thanks.....

Do you have his death certificate?  Those typically contain cemetery information.

Was he living in Dedham?  Did he die from an accident?  If so, the information might be contained in a news article or obituary in a local newspaper.

hello ashhill, i believe i may have found sidney hill in the 1920 us federal census. he is a widower, age 51, born 1869 in england. his occupation is engineer. He is a patient in Anna Jaques Hospital in newburyport city which is a seaport in essex county mass. Worth looking at but perhaps you have already found this.

Massachusetts, Death Index for Sidney Hill says that he died in 1922, Boston.   Record can be found in Volume 1, Page 413.

It is incorrectly transcribed as Dedham 1924 (most likely from line below his entry).

The 1923 Boston City directory states that Sidney L. Hill died June 4, 1922.

The 1922 Boston city directory has Sidney L. Hill listed as an elevator operator and residing at 34 Dwight.

The 1921 Boston city directory says Sidney L. Hill was an elevatorman and rooms at 34 Dwight.

Looking at the 1920 Census, there is a Sydney Hill living at 34 Dwight in Boston and working as an elevator operator.  However, he was born in Maine about 1855.

I think the 1922 death may not be for your guy.

It is also worth noting that the 1920 census for the Sidney Hill in Newburyport lists him as a lodger and an engineer for the hospital, rather than a patient.

I now see from your posts on other sections of the board that the man in Massachusetts may not be your great-grandfather.  The 1920 census of the man in Newburyport gives his time of immigration to the US as 1890, but your other posts indicate that he was in the UK until much later.

In the future, I would recommend trying to obtain information that verifies when and where the death was before trying to contact cemeteries.  If you're looking at the wrong person or the wrong location, it's a waste of time for you and the people at the cemetery.
