Essex BLAND's... help!
« on: Monday 12 July 04 21:56 BST (UK) »
Hi

Clutching at straws here but is there any one who can shed any light on the adoption by the Bland family of Tilbury, Essex of a son Eric Albert Theodore Bland in about 1914?
The Bland family owned about 4 grocer shops in the Tilbury area including Sydney Road and St Chad's Road 1900 and 1960ish.  For a time they also lived in Stanford le Hope.  Mr and Mrs Bland also had 3 other children of their own Edward(Cycil)1900, Gwen 1901 and Archie 1903.
Rumour has it that Eric's birth mother may have been from Belgium.
I know it's a long time ago but I was wondering if it may have croped up in anyone else's tree somewhere.
Eric served with the RAF during WW2 and married Elsie Sparke from Liverpool.  They ran the St Chad's road shop for may years and had a son David.

Any info no matter how trivial will be most appreciated.

Thanks

Charles Trevor Mayo was my grandfather and Marjorie Mayo b 1913  my mother who died  in 1987 - Emily Martin remarried after Charles died.I do not know the year of his death I have very little info on the Mayo side of the family but do have a copper plate regarding the company Wixley &  co relating to an address in Fore St EC . Charles was a 'shop fitter'.
Your research enabled me to trace back much further than i had knowledge of....

Thank you for the new information, Turquois,

as promised, your direct lineage of the matriarch of this family.
Elizabeth Cross, the daughter of Peter Cross and Elizabeth Burnham, Peter Cross chr. 13 Nov 1739 in Woodbridge the son of Peter Cross chr. 25 May 1710 Walton, Suffolk, the son of Edmond Crosse b. 3 Sep 1678 Woodbridge, the son of Peter Cross(e) b. 18 Aug 1678 of Woodbridge, son of Edmond Cross(e) b. circa 1600-1620 of Woodbridge, Suffolk, England

Peter "Sr." m. Mary Wilkenson
Edmond m. Mary Freeman
Peter (the father of Edmond) m. 1st Joanne/Johannah maiden name unknown
Edmond (the father of Peter who m. Joanne/Johannah) m. Sarah, maiden name said to be Hinde, but haven't found proof of that.
Edmond who m. Sarah-their parents are not yet known to me.

Peter and some of his siblings were baptised in the Church of England but the family was marked as dissenters. in 1655, Edmond removed his family from the Church of England and joined the Quaker faith.

Edmond Cross and Mary Freeman had 6 children. their 2nd child, Edmund, is my ancestor. he removed to Colchester and m. Hannah Hawkins at Colchester meeting. his brother, Peter, who was the 5th child, is your ancestor. Peter remained in Woodbridge, marrying Mary Wilkenson there, and their apparently sole surviving child, Peter, Jr., later removed to Colchester where he rejoined the faith.

all the known collateral lines can be found here (it's too big to post here, yet is incomplete);
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&db=necko&id=I3002

my ancestry from my grandmother back-Ruth E. Cross>James F. Cross>William H. Cross>Joseph Cross, Jr.>Joseph Cross, Sr>Edmund Cross the younger>Edmond Cross>Peter Cross(e)>Edmond Cross(e) the earliest know ancestor.

there is a plethora of Edmond's and Peters in the tree, particularly prior to 1837, that can muddle and befuddle the mind unless one is looking at the paperwork and has a good fundamental knowledge of the family. trying to sort them out in my head can bring on a mental shutdown!
