Paternal tree print off
« on: Saturday 16 November 13 14:49 GMT (UK) »
Is there a way of just printing off the paternal line from either my complete maternal/paternal Ancestry tree or from FTM 2012 please?  In simple terms though as not very good on the technical side! I would like to send it to an 86 year old relative who is not computer aware as a gift. Thankyou.

A simple solution is available in FTM2012.
1. Create a Descendant Chart with the oldest person at the top
2. In the right hand panel, change the Descendants option from "All descendants" to the person you want at the bottom of the chart.

This may, or may not, be what you want as spouses are shown but siblings are not displayed. Another option is a Relationship Chart but this doesn't even show spouses. There is another way to make a chart in exactly the format you want but it is very fiddly and can be quite difficult.

Thankyou for replying, I will give that a go as it sounds as if that will produce what I want.

If you want to print an extended family tree, but only for your paternal side, here is the technique I would use in FTM:
1: Make a copy of your tree - this to be used only for printing.
2: Disconnect your mother from her parents using Person-> Attach/Detach
3: Create the extended family chart from your father.
4: Take a critical look at the text in your chart and perform (global) edits as necessary by doing a <RIGHT CLICK> on an individual on the chart. For instance if you have hundreds of people born in "Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England" this would look much better as "Nottingham, Notts".
5: [ONLY when you have completed all text edits AND made a final selection on Paper Size] The extended tree format often creates multiple entries for an individual connected to a)their spouse and b)their parents. You can <Ctrl>Click on groups of individuals to select them and move them around the chart as desired using the <Shift>Arrow keys.
6: Printing - you may be lucky enough that FTM can create a single-page pdf file for printing. If not, the print would have to be done directly from FTM.

Thank you for your advice.  I did manage to print off a descendant tree but obviously it did not give detail to the siblings and main line.  The relative was very happy with what I was able to do.
I have been looking at FTM 2014 and as I understand the blurb it would appear that the maternal/paternal lines can be separated so I am wondering whether to upgrade my FTM to the 2014 issue to make this an easier option.

You are correct, in that FTM2014 does have a feature which I believe is what you want.

A right-click on any person brings up a menu which includes "Export Branch". This produces a paternal (or maternal) tree with all spouses and siblings, both ancestors and descendants. The resultant tree can be culled if there are too many individuals present.

Thank you, I shall have to invest in an update.  Researching my tree is an aid to expanding my computer knowledge re how to work programmes etc., otherwise I don't think I would bother!
