Straid Townland missing family Deery
« on: Thursday 14 November 13 05:36 GMT (UK) »
Gt grandfather Hugh Deery married to Mary Ann Beattie/Beatty. Lived at Straid Townland  and had 6 children, all registered as born in Straid. From Anne in 1874 to James  in 1887.Mary Ann died in 1892. Her death registered by her daughter Anne. Death in Straid. I have searched the Griffiths Revision Books for Hugh and can't find him. Why would a family not show up? There is a rumour in the family that a long time ago he changed his name to Adair. Any thoughts would be gratefully received : ) Thank you

Only the head of the household is listed in Griffith's Valuation and the revision books.

Hi,
I have come across a case where a man was employed to manage a farm by an owner who lived in Australia. The man lived in the farmhouse with his family according to the 1901 census; however the Revision Books listed the owner in Australia.

I can see a Deery household in Straid on the 1901 census, with a Landlord George Rosborough. Their immediate neighbour in the census was Eliza Guiler. (Same landlord). There’s a widow Gealor on property 4b and an Eliza Gealor on 4c in the revaluation records for 1901. So I’d guess that the Deery family lived somewhere on that farm (ie farm 4a).

Thank you everyone for such prompt replies! I never thought of the owner being listed and the manager of the farm wasn't. I'll have another look at the Valuation and the property 4a. I was going round in circles trying to find the family as I knew they had to be somewhere.

What was Hugh's occupation on his children's birth certificates?

I haven't seen any of the birth certificates but I had a Proffessional search carried out when I as trying to find Hugh's marriage. He reported that Hugh's occupation was Labourer on the marriage certificate and gave the names of the  children.

Hi,
Hugh Deery married Mary Ann Beatie in Feeny Roman Catholic Church in 1873. This church lies a few miles west of the town of Dungiven and to the east of Claudy.

Thank you for telling me where the church is as in 2014 I'll be travelling from Australia to Ireland. This will save me a lot of time trying to find this out. Everyone is so incredibly helpfull on this site.
