Great find with an excellent description of Joseph HOLLOWAY's death.

Noting you name and the origin of the HOLLOWAY brothers, I wonder, emsworth, if you and I are cousins-by-marriage - very distant cousins anyway!

I have in my tree a Gawen HOLLOWAY who married my 3G-aunt Martha Ann MIDLANE in 1802 at Brockhampton Chapel.  Martha died at Emsworth in 1808 and is buried at Warblington.  I have access to interesting booklet which is a publication of The Catholic Record Society and includes the registers of the chapel at Brockhampton and the correspondence of the priest.  There are a number of mentions of HOLLOWAYs but I have only photocopied references to my MIDLANE ancestors.  I'm very happy to have another look if you think it would be useful.  I don't want to hijack this thread so PM me if you would like further information.

I see this thread which mentions Gawen as the brother of a Joseph HOLLOWAY.   ::) Looking further I see you have contributed to the thread.

Having stupidly forgotten that this thread was running last year I started another.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=676510.new;topicseen#new

The new thread adds little to this one except a TROVE article which shows that Joseph HOLLOWAY borrowed money - 2000pounds - and died owing about 1300pounds which was not recovered, leaving his guarantor owing the debt.

Thanks for  the information. Poor Joseph! Shot at by bandits  and losing his brother. Presumably he died before making his fortune. £10000 was a huge sum then. Were you interested in Gawen  Holloway he finished up bankrupt too.

The book I have, that I mentioned before, has some recollections as well as the transcripts of BMDs for the RC parish.  I have only photocopied the BMD pages for my MIDLANE family but the biographical section quotes a letter of recollections written by Sister Mary Maurus Corney O.S.B. (dau of Charles F Corney and Susanna Bulbeck), who was brought up in the area. Her address is St Mary's Priory, Princethorpe near Rugby, and the letter is dated May, 1915.

It doesn't seem to fit the known events though.

Emsworth
Of late years there were not many Catholics there.
Mrs Goen? Holloway
Her son died young at Old Hall (or soon after he left it). a Daughter married Mr John Snook of Bedhampton, in the end she and her daughter gave up the church all together (after the new church was built) through shame!

Would this be the marriage referred to? If so the writer of the letter could hardly have known these people personally although I do see a death for Maria Augusta SNOOK (b abt 1807)1889 in Chelsea London.

John Snooks, also indexed as John SNOOKE
Marriage: 9 Jul 1829, Warblington,Hampshire,England
Spouse:    Mary Augusta Holloway

Did Gawen marry again?

Just curious.  :-\

The book I quote from is
