reginald brown Help South lancashire reginemt
« on: Wednesday 13 November 13 12:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi can anyone help
I am trying to start a trace on my grandfather reginald brown after many brick walls I have finally got a glimmer of hope
can anyone tell me anything about silver war badge no 205096
he was possibly serving in the south lancashire regiment service no 22224
30th oct 1915 and discharged 1917 ( which rings true with what he always told us that he was too young to join up and gave a fake D.O.B )

any information would be appreciated no matter how small

Thank you all so much
But I am Gutted... this is obviously not him I suppose I got my hope up too much again
the dates and regiment all ties in I know he served in a pilkington regiment as he was given a smallholding in Duxbury when he came out of the war also a grave plot from pilkingtons in St helens Cemetary

But sadly my Gfater was well over 6ft tall not 5ft 8 as noted on your very much appreciated efforts
what do you do when you just keep hitting a brick wall

all I know about him basically after 2 years of digging is d.o.b is 1897 dec   born ? died 1985 in chorley
married ruth waring in st helens ( prescot )
his mother was Charlotte brown ( Heald) D.o.B 1878  born laverstock hants died 1930 burried in st helens cemetary

and he spend part of his childhood in Lincoln
other than after that I am drawing blanks where ever I turn

Oh well just keep going I might learn about him one day :(

Does the address 28a George Street or 109 Napier Street  (both St Helens) ring any bells?

109 Napier st does but thats as much as I know really
I believe my grandmother his wife (Ruth waring )grew up in the gate house of Knowlsey estate ( now safari Park )
and they knew each other from a very young age

George st though nothing at all

My grandfather always said he changed his name and I suspect he had more than 1 alias that he used why I have no idea
I know he started life in lincoln I have located his birth certificate and Have him in prescot when he is 3 with his mother and sister and brother
winifred and I think william Charlotte his mother was originally heald her family I can now trace back to 1600 and have found family I never knew I had, but grandad is a living nightmare

I think his father was Herbert Brown ( 1875 where or how he died is a mystery )and his father was Thomas Brown C1845)
now after 2 years of searching you know as much as I do

I know reginald was born 1897 in lincoln and died 1985 Chorley / preston
I know when he joined up he faked his age as he was too young then he was wounded and medically discharged with shrapnel in his head and legs but at some point he signed away his disability pension and rejoined the army
years later in the 1970s the british leigion got it reinstated and he got a back pay sum of money
I also know he got a grave plot at st helens cemetary as a "perk" and I say that lighlty from Pilkingtons Glass and a small holding at Duxbury when he came home from the war

but literally anything you can gleam would be much appreciated

The St Helens Absent Voters Roll for Spring 1920 lists Reginald Herbert Brown, Pte 245065 RFA, living at 109 Napier Street, St Helens

He is also recorded with the same address and number in the Autumn 1920 and Spring 1921 Rolls, though now as a Driver.

In the Autumn of 1921 he is listed as a Gunner

Finally, the Spring 1922 Roll lists him with the new 7-digit number of 1042188.

So this man clearly stayed on in service after the war, to the extent he was given the 7 digit number. I believe that you should be able to get his papers from the Veterans Agency on payment of £30 and after a wait of a few months - but that is only worth pursuing if you are convinced that this is the right man!

The MIC shows his entitlement as BWM and VM but no further details.
