Might need some help here please
« on: Tuesday 12 November 13 01:24 GMT (UK) »
Greetings fellow Rootschatters,

been looking for a long time for the death record of my grandfathers friend, it's starting to get a bit frustrating, anyways I'll give some details & hopefully someone might be able to find a clue

His name is Ernest William Crouch, born 1889/1890? at Portsea Hants, parish of Portland, county of Dorsetshire, he was in the Navy & 1911 census shows him aboard a Naval vessel, can't recall the name, last entry in Navy records ends in 1928, I've searched obituaries, newspapers & other records, got a death certificate of what I thought was a match but proved to be the wrong person

Verbal history is it might be a suicide so finding his final resting place could be difficult

many thanks

James

He was registered as Ernest William O. Crouch Mar Q 1890 he does not appear to use the initial O. on later records. In 1911 he was on a ship at Portland [Weymouth] Dorset.

thanks for the replies, have to excuse my limited knowledge on locations around UK, I don't live there  :)

I have seen the BMD record but the date doesn't seem a possible match, ( though I won't discount it either ), my mother was a young child & recalls his wife coming around to tell the bad news as they were good friends, the time period we are looking at would be 1927 onwards

many thanks for your time & info, I will check everything

FreeBMD is, as it's name suggests, free to use.

Looking at the death indexes for an Ernest Crouch, with an age commensurate with a birth in 1890 gives few alternatives? ???

September qtr 1927
Edmonton district    vol 3a, page 450
Crouch, Ernest G    age 37

Plus the 1948 death

And another:
December qtr 1953
Surrey N district    vol 5g, page 346
Crouch, Ernest J    age 64
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

thanks KG, the one in 1927 looks very interesting, I'll have a very close look at this one, as the verbal story goes when Ernest heard that my Grandfather ( his best friend ) had died he went into a deep depression & took his own life, the time frame for this is unknown but my Grandfather died in August 1927 & this Ernest in September, looks promising, the middle initial is G though as we all know spelling can be a problem, took me a long time to find my Grandfathers Navy record because the spelling of the surname was wrong
