Edward VAUGHAN m. Elizabeth Carter WALLER
« on: Tuesday 12 November 13 00:53 GMT (UK) »
My 5x-grt-grandfather, Edward VAUGHAN  m. Elizabeth Carter WALLER,  2 May 1782 in Portsmouth St Thomas, HAM.
The licence stated "Edward Vaughan of Alverstoke".
It's quite likely that they had at least one child named Edward in the area within the next 2 years, one of whom died within a month.
By 1790, they were having children in Whitechapel, London.

BUT Edward is my brick wall.  I cannot find anything about him earlier than the marriage.  Are there any overlapping histories out there?

Thanks from Canada,
Phil Vaughan

Just a thought and quite a long shot I suppose, do you know if Edward was a mariner or similar? He may have been in Alverstoke at the time of his marriage but with him having children in Whitechapel from 1790 could he have been baptised in London and returned there?

On familysearch.org there are some possibles but of course they may turn out to be wrong - a couple of examples

Edward 25 Jun 1758 St George in the East Stepney, parents Edward and Mary
Edward 23 Jun 1764 St Andrew Holborn parents Edward and Ann

Might be worth following the families through to see if there could be a link to the "sea" somewhere

Thanks, Shirl.

Yes, the mariner angle and the possibility that his was one of the London baptisms have occurred to me, but I haven't been able to forge a link.  Other than the location (Portsmouth,) I have nothing that implies a seafaring career.  There was an Edward baptised in 1764, at Bishopstoke, as I recall, a couple of miles north of the port ... but no real link.

If the two Edwards born in the Portsmouth area were theirs, it would strengthen the theory that my 5ggf was born to one of the London Edwards.  I've been hoping that daughter Caroline's name might yield a clue, but no luck so far.

Good luck trying to find a link, it can be a real challenge and you never know the name association might just work somewhere.

The 2 Edward children baptised in the Portsmouth area certainly do look good for children of Edward  and Elizabeth.  Do you know where and when Edward senior died just in case that might give an age?

No sure birth OR death information for Edward, I'm afraid ... he has been rather obstinate, that way.  There are some burials and deaths in the London area within a reasonable time frame, but nothing that quite sounds right.  New material shows up now and then, though, so I'll keep watching.

Good luck, it might be one part of your tree that you can never be 100% sure on. Have you looked at the 1764 Bishopstoke baptism and followed that family through to rule it out? Bishopstoke is about 19 mile from Alverstoke / Porstmouth so it is quite a distance.

The 2 Edward baptisms in 1783 and 1784 with parents Edward and Elisabeth, the baptisms were held at Gosport High Street Chapel (Independent), are there any other connections to non conformist baptisms?

I didn't put much hope in the Bishopstoke baptism ... perhaps I haven't put enough effort into it.

While there was one Elizabeth Waller baptised at the Gosport High Street Chapel (along with a pack of siblings) she was not the only one in the area.

I keep finding just enough to muddy the waters but not enough to clear them again.
