Newsagents in Motherwell
« on: Sunday 10 November 13 16:07 GMT (UK) »
I was wondering if anyone can help me.This is driving me insane! As a child,I remember a tiny newsagents, almost like a shed, nestled in next to what was then a doctors surgery. This would be just before the turn off for Knowetop. The doctor's is  now a hairdressers and is 460 Windmillhill st.Locals will know that next to that is a patch of grass, between the patch of grass and the Hair Store building is some bushes, this wee shop was in   there, around late 1970's early 1980's. Noone, including my mum remembers it.Can anyone shed any light on this please?

Angela

I can't remember it, so if it was there it couldn't have been there for very long. There was a big 3-story sandstone tenement at the corner of Airbles Road (with the Commercial Bank at ground floor level), then adjoining that was a long 2-story tenement, then came the "big hoose" at the corner of Toll St, then another long 2-story building (I think this was called Walmer Terrace) that ended at the cottages in front of Dalziel bowling green.
I don't even remember the hairdressers ever being a doctors surgery. I do remember Dr Wyper's little place across from Taggarts.
All those tenements must have come down in the late 1960s and there's been nothing on that land since, apart from the new flats at the other side of Toll St.

Thanks Lodger. As far as I remember that building that is the Hairdressers was a lawyers office and a doctors surgery. In fact,Dr Wyper may have been in it at one point. As a child I only ever remember the area where the new surgery is across from the new Toll st flats as being waste ground.I do remember the Taggarts buildings across from the school too at one point. "The big hoose" you are talking about at the corner of Toll St is that what Im talking about? It's now the Hair Store, looks out across to what was Strathclyde caravans? Everytime I try to explain where this is people end up confused and on the wrong end of the street lol, which makes it difficult to explain! Angela

My father and husband were patients of the Dr's surgery housed in the red sandstone, detached property (70's and early 80's) - Motherwell Health Centre opened and they moved there.  I remember one of hubby's Drs was a Dr Shah, can't think who the others were.

I don't remember the shop you mention but we lived in Wishaw and only visited the area when a Dr's visit was needed so I've probably not noticed it.

You have, however, evoked a memory of "Wee Susie's" on Dryburgh Road, Wishaw - it was a wooden hut and sold lots of yummy sweets. ;D

Hi Angela,
Brian, from the Local studies dept, Motherwell Heritage Centre, has a picture of the shop called Mc Donalds, on the corner of Toll St, and Windmillhill St.
You can get a copy for a small fee, give him a call.

Hi Angela,
Your not going insane, I remember this shop as we used to buy sweets at school lunchtime from it. As Lud describes it was situated on the corner of Toll Street, and Windmillhill Street.   8)
