Lowca
« on: Friday 08 November 13 10:29 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
Can anyone help me, I am looking for help in identifying the location of a couple of street names in the village of Lowca.

I am looking for the location of the street names of "East Row" and "West Row" as I had relatives living in these two locations in 1911.

I have searched on the Old Maps website but all I can find is "East Road", "East Croft Terrace" and "West Croft Terrace".
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards
Brian

Yes Brian, they are East and West Croft Terraces.  Slightly odd as both sides of the street have different names and their own numbering schemes (even today).

What was your family name?  My mam lived there for her first 20 years.

Looking south down the road towards Whitehaven ...
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Geoff
Many thanks for your speedy reply.
My Father in Law’s name was Thomas Jackson. He was born in 1911 at 16, East Row, Lowca.
He was baptised at Moresby church and the Baptism certificate gives the address as 16, East Row Lowca.
He is also listed on the 1911 census at 1 month old as living at 16 East Row, Lowca.

We also have a Jane Jackson on the 1911 Census living at 6, West Row, Lowca.

I did wonder if the street names may have changed over the years but I couldn’t find any reference to an East & West Row on any of the early maps.

I was slightly confused by the entries on the following website. http://7borderandyeo.webs.com/WGP1.htm
If you search for “Lowca” within the webpage you will see Samual Agnew listed at 15, West Row and Joseph Boyles listed at 8, East Croft Terrace.

The reason for the individual names and numbering of East and West Croft Terrace is that East Croft Terrace was built first this is shown on the 1899 map on “Old Maps”.
Sadly the next map is 1925 and as expected West Croft terrace is shown it must have been built sometime before 1911.

I know Lowca quite well as we have had many trips over to that particular area researching family history.

Thanks again for your help.

You may notice that in the 1911 census, there are 24 houses on West Row and 22 on East Row.  The matches the number of houses on each side of the road on the 1925 map.

I looked at Lowca electoral registers a couple of years ago (they have them in Whitehaven and at Carlisle).  My BURNS family were at 5 West Row from 1918 till Autumn 1923.  From Spring 1924 onwards, their home had become 5 West Croft Terrace - so I think this probably answers your original question. :)

A different sort of "re-addressing" took place c1935 when houses on Croft Head terrace numbered above 30 had 30 subtracted and became Meadow View e.g. 42 Croft Head Terrace >>> 12 Meadow View. :)
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.
