spalding prison

hi to all
i am trying to find any info that relates to the spalding prison offically called

HER MAJESTYS PRISON FOR THE PARTS OF HOLLAND AND KESTEVEN

it's was just off sheep market

especially around the time of 1861 census also anything that relates to william gallant my gggg grandad he was a prisoner at the time of the census

i hope someone can help

Have you been on the www.1837online.co.uk? the 1861 census is now fully searchable online. It costs 3 units to look at the transcribed details, you have to buy £5 worth at a time - if i had any units left i'd have a look for you.

If you find anything outside of the ordinary census info please let me know as in 1881 my Gt Gt Grandmother was a servant there to a James and Emma Higgins the masters of the prison.

and thanks for replying i have the image and found a web site with not alot of detail unfortunatley only says my grandad was a prisoner but have to dig a bit further as im interested in why he was in there he is out by 1871

There are two pages with pictures about the Prison in the book "Aspects of Spalding 1790 to1930" by Norman Leveritt & Michael Elsden. The book is out of print but may be availably 2nd hand. Try searching online. It was built in the Sheep Market 1824-5, enlarged in1851-2, and closed in 1884. In 1879 it held 59 males & 13 females.

Hi Kim,
The book "Aspects of Spalding" is out of print and I have seen one secondhand for sale localy at £50. I dont think it is worth you buying at this sort of price for the limited information. Look at GENUKI Spalding,Lincs web site as there is some information on it including a list of inmates etc for a certain year.

that is expensive i might try and see if i can get it through my local library i live in peterborough if not i could travel to spalding library to see if they have it to photocopy the pages i am interested in

Kim,
You don't need to travel to Spalding unless you really want too. I can scan and send you the pages from my copy of the book. I was at school with one of the authors and have signed copies of the Spalding ones. I actually went to visit the library yesterday and found it closes on Thursdays at 12.30.
also closed at weekend.
