WW1 records?

Hello everybody.
I would like some help in trying to find "Possible Records" for my great grand father, John McCrea born 16th Jan 1888. in Kilwaughter Larne, Northern Ireland.
It is only a family "saying" that he served in WW1 but unfortunately that is all of the information that I have, I have gone through many records via other sites but just can't seem to locate him anywhere? if this is true he must have been about 26 years old when he joined up, would this age have been ok at the time??
Any help with this matter would really be appreciated.

Hi

Surviving WW1 Army Service Records are on Ancestry but some 60% were destroyed by fire during WW2.
If he married or had children during the war then the certificates may indicate whether he served or not.

Is that date correct?

Unless John McCrea died in the War (and there's no indication that he did) then the Medal Cards for those that were killed can be eliminated as possibilites.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Yes, I double checked, the date is correct. It was before the war.
