Brooklyn Family Needs Date
« on: Sunday 03 November 13 20:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi All -

These family members lived in the New York / New Jersey area.

Your clothing/fashion expertise is needed to pinpoint an accurate year so that the child can be used to identify them.

As for the child, what's your opinion; a boy or a girl ?

Thank You, your help is greatly appreciated.

Mid 1920s, and I think the kid is a girl with white socks. I think.

What's on the back, is it a postcard?

Cheers,

No Chinakay - it's not a postcard or a professional photographers shot. It's just a regular home made photo. There's another of very poor quality of the man & child wearing ice skates on a pond.

Why do you place it mid 20's ?

Cloche hat, very specific to the 20s. Dropped waist on the coat, style came out about 1922 and lasted till the end of the decade....same dropped waist on her blouson as well, you can just see it inside the coat. Typical boyish silhouette on the lady as the feminine shape was definitely OUT during the 20s. Hems started going up in the 20s, about knee length mid decade, then above the knee (for the more daring ones anyway) until 1929 when hems dropped again. Along with the stock market :)

Were you expecting a different time frame?

Cheers,
China

Not really. I knew it was the 20's or 30's, but that's too big a spread to figure out who they might be. Now there's a tighter time frame to work with.

Thanks so much for your help.

I would say the child is a girl, just because of the way her buttons are fastened from R to L, where
 the gentleman's buttons are L to R !

Yes I'd say a little girl too because of the buttons and I'm sure she is wearing a dress under the coat too. boys would have had woollen knee socks and britches or knee length trousers in dark material.

I'd have to agree with the majority, the kid's a girl.

Now, with that settled, this girl looks about 5 ? Or 6 ?
What do you think ?

There's a pretty solid chance, with her being a girl, this was a kid born about 1924, which would then date the photo around 1929 - 1930 (according to how old I think she looks).

So I guess the next 2 questions are
1) How old do you think she is ?
2) Does that age work (if she's b. 1924) with all this clothing style you've given ?
