Hi

You haven't given any details of when Joseph was born.

SP index shows a Madden/Pepper marriage in 1916 so he was born post-1916

Did his parents remain in Scotland?  If so - you will need to use SP to look for their deaths

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

EDIT - SP index shows a Joseph Madden birth 1918 in Rutherglen

Hi CaroleW
Thank you for the information. Yes I think the Joseph Madden you found is 'our' Joe, born Dec 04, 1918. He was the Son of Robert Madden and Jenny Pepper. We know Joe had siblings but have been unable to trace them.

The problem you will have in Scotland is that, unlike for England, you cannot search online for births on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk with the family name and the mother's maiden name. You can do this type of search from around 1927, but only in person from one of the main genealogy centres...which won't help you here for now I think.

As Carole has suggested, you could try checking for deaths of parents to see whether any siblings of Joe may have reported parents' deaths. I think mother Jenny may have died in Rutherglen in 1940. Images for deaths can be viewed online for that year on Scotlands People (see here www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Content/Help/index.aspx?r=554&413 for what images can be viewed online instantly and what needs to be ordered, due to data protection issues).

One search that you could do on Scotlands People (SP) is to check for births between 1916-36 for Madden in Rutherglen. I can see 25 entries there which you could view for just 1 unit (max 25 entries per search result). If you haven't already, you can view the marriage cert online for Robert and Jenny from 1916. Their parents' names as showing on their marriage will give you hopefully clues as to possible children's names for them.

Unfortunately SP does not allow you to search births using mothers maiden name in the way you can on freebmd

Assuming Joseph was their first born - the SP index shows 13 Madden births in Rutherglen between 1919-1930

Using the advanced search and showing Jenny Pepper reduces that to one match in Rutherglen 1920 which you may want to take a look at

If you then search on all counties/districts - not just Rutherglen - there is another match in 1921 using the above advanced search

Hi Carole  :)

I think our post crossed.

Birth images/certs post 1912 currently due to 100 yr privacy rule. As a 'just in case', I searched for births as Madd*n for my 25 entries in Rutherglen between 1916 (and the likely marriage year you found) and 1936 (using a 20yr baby making range  :o).

Monica

Added: Mother Jenny's likely death in 1940 shows her as Jean. Common variants of this name here www.whatsinaname.net/female-names/Jean.html

Thanks to you both. :) From your information, now I can see it is some what different searching in Scotland. I don't think the Jenny you managed to find is Joe's mother. We recall he went to Rutherglen to see her and we believe, his sister just after WWII but thanks for your help.

The death I mentioned is the only one showing for a J* Madden/Pepper (even taking our the first name initial of 'J'). You might want to review dates.... Best way would be to confirm her parents' names from the marriage entry that Carole has mentioned and then comparing with that 1940 death in Rutherglen...

Hi

I completely forgot to mention the 100yr rule when I posted so apologies for the oversight.
