Born: Elvington Yorkshire 1852. Married: in 1874 (London) and again in 1900 (Yokohama, Japan).
Died in Tientsin in 1920.

You're in luck - his death was registered with the British Consul so the GRO holds a record.

Index details as follows:

GRO Consular Death Indices (1849 to 1965)

NORRIS-NEWMAN, Charles L W M, aged 61

Consulate:Tientsin, China

Year:1921-1925

Volume :15

Use these details to order the certificate from the GRO's online service, using their "Overseas Events" form when that option comes up.

Thank you once again for such help.

I have one last query if you could help: Were there any children of this marriage to Lilian Louise Ehmcke - In particular one Joyce Lilian Sherwood Norris Newman born 27 Oct 1909? And is there any death record for Lilian Louise Norris-Newman. Was it possible to register wills abroad with the British Consulate?

I saw that forum too - think Keithchr is a recent contributor to it.

I can't see anything promising on wife or daughter after the marriage - sorry.
