Hackney Hospital Death 1978
« on: Friday 25 October 13 23:40 BST (UK) »
I am doing research into the Family Tree of my sisters husband Patrick Halpin. I have a death certificate for his father Christopher Halpin who died at Hackney Hospital on 17/03/1978. His date of birth was given as January 1894 in Ireland. He was a retired Carpenter from 45 Rendlesham Road, Clapton, E5.The informant was Edward Halpin, son of 34 Glenhill Park, Finglas Road, Dublin, (Ireland) The cause of death was entered as below.
1 6y Broncho pneumonia
(b) Chronic Bronchitis.
2 Chronic Renal Failure secondary to
Chronic Pyelonephritis
Ischaemic Heart disease.
Certified by R. H. Jones. M. B. B.S
Date of registration. 22/03/1978.

It is not known by the family where he is buried. According to the Mortuary Register of Hackney Hospital the Undertaker was Kendal’s. Kendal’s no longer exists; it was taken over by T. Cribbs some time ago. We have asked Cribbs if they still have Kendal’s records, but they were disposed of around the time they took over I’m afraid.

We would be grateful for any help you can provide us with or if you could suggest where we could seek it?
Thank you for your time.

Hi

Is Edward still alive?  If so - as he reported the death, did he make the funeral arrangments?

Is cremation more likely than burial?

Had Christopher been living in England for a long time or did he die whilst visiting?  I wondered if his body may have been taken back to Ireland if he died whilst on a visit

Would there have been a newspaper announcement? either or both English or Irish paper. Might give funeral details.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi, Thank youall for your quick replies.
Edward died in London about 11 years later! I have since found out the address he gave was that of his brother in Dublin who has also passed away so there is no information forthcoming in that quarter.
Christopher was living in England since 1929/30 but it is not known where.
There is a family story that he is buried in a paupers grave somewhere in London.
According to theHackney Hospital Mortuary Register, the Undertaker was Kendal’s. Kendal’s no longer exists; it was taken over by T. Cribbs some time ago. Cribbs have asked if they still have Kendal’s records, but they were disposed of around the time they took over I'm afraid.
I doubt if there was any newspaper announcement of his death. If anyone has access to English papers could they have a look.
Any further help or suggestions would be gratefully received.
