Ford Cemetery Public section B

Does anyone know if this section actually has grave stones in?  I have been searching my family tree for years and have not yet found a grave stone just a plot.  I am going searching in Preston next week and wondered if it was worth doing a quick detour!  The information I have is Mary Catherine Crawford 1943, public section B 275.

Which Ford cemetery do you mean? a quick google search shows there's more than 1.

Which ever cemetery, once you've found it on google, the best thing to do would be to contact the cemetery offce and ask them directly.

The Ford Cemetery in question is the Catholic cemetery in Liverpool. Normally a public grave would not have gravestones. There are at least 4 burials within days in that grave but it could be worth checking whether there is any sort of marker or not,

Thanks for your help, I assumed I would be unlucky, from all my ancestors I have not found one grave stone!  Think it is a shame that a plaque or something could not have been put on the public graves at the time, I have managed to put a stone on my Aunt's grave in Preston which is also a public grave.

Buried in a paupers grave and buried in a common grave aren't quite the same thing and our ancestors would largely be appalled that we thought they were. They scrimped and saved where they could to make sure the funeral and burial were paid for and their loved ones did not receive a pauper's funeral.

Many families could not (and still can't) afford the expense of a cemetery plot, let alone a gravestone. Such burials would be in common graves which contained other unrelated interments.

With cremation nowadays so popular (even for Roman Catholics) subsequent burial in common graves isn't the necessity it once was.

Just had a look at Liverpool's cemeteries page and they charge a non-resident £1676 for the plot and £1368 for the actual burial. That's without the fees the funeral director will charge on top for the coffin, hearse, etc.

Not cheap.
