Date: Thursday, October 23, 1919     Paper: Jersey Journal (Jersey City, NJ)   Page: 6
Stephen Zahray, a blind pianist, was arrested, for perjury on a New York warrant.  He had applied for a marriage license last july.  He stated he was single when he was married.

Stephen's WWI draft registration card from June 1917 lists him as married - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KZJK-F86

Stephen Zahray is listed on the New York City grooms' index here - http://italiangen.org/records-search/grooms.php  The brides' name is Agnes E. OGorman.

The 1920 census seems to list Stephen as married, but no wife of his is listed in the household.  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M4RB-YVL

Considering their age at first marriage as listed on the 1930 census, Genevieve and Stephen Zahray married about 5 years earlier.

1925 Jersey City directory
Zahray, Genevieve, clerk, 17 Oakland av.
Zahray, Stephen J., insurance agent, 17 Oakland av.
(also listed at the same address were Rudolf & Cornelia Zahray)

Yes in the 1940 census Genieve and (*) are said to be Werder born New York, a married couple for the census, but William didn't divorce his first wife Christina until 1950.  The Hansen family name is via William Werder's sons marriage, not sure why I refer to (*) 1930 as Hansen?  I'll check that out, probably me confusing families  ::).  I did look for any (*) born New York 1930?

There is a family tree that I found that lists Genevieve as Genevieve Volzenlugel, born 27 Apr. 1890 in New York to John J. Volzenlugel & Mary Pichette, and died 11 Feb. 1966 in Jersey City, New Jersey.

It lists her husbands as (1) James Gurney Andrews, married 7 Apr. 1911 at Our Lady of Grace Rectory, Hoboken, NJ, (2) Stephen Zahray, and (3) Christopher Ignatius Maher, married 27 Sep. 1950 at Sacred Heart RC Church in Jersey City, NJ.  There is a picture of a gravestone for her & Christopher.

No mention of William Werder on the tree.

You beat me to it Shelley :D  I just added the Steven John Zahray and up came three family trees, one has no name where (*) would be just private so still living?  It also lists Steven but no marriage date.   I can add a name for Genevieve now, often spelt Genieve in census.  I'm pretty certain it's correct.  Of course the Zahray family are not directly linked to the tree I was researching as daughter was Steven's child, but it all adds to the story.  And as she married later it would seem her time with William was something that suited them both at the time, but I wonder how long they were together either side of the 1940 census.   Merry Christmas fred

Hi All!

I actually spoke with my Grandmother today (she is alive and well!) and I asked her about all of the findings from this website.  She initially was not forthcoming with this information... I guess it get's confusing after so many years.  But here is what I gathered from her so far:

Genevieve (great-grandmother) - born 1889 as Genevieve Volzer (or Volzunlugal but I need to confirm this...).

Genevieve's first marriage was to a man named James Andrews.  In the 1920 census, they appear to be living with Genevieve's parents John & Mary Volzer.

Then she married Stephen Zahray around 1925 and had my grandmother in 1930.  Stephen died in 1930.

I don't think Genevieve and William ever married... but my grandmother always considered him to be her father.  She did not find out about Stephen Zahray being her father until she was 16 when she needed her birth certificate for work.

I'm not sure how long the relationship lasted with William, but Genevieve later married Christopher Maher around 1950.

Feel free to msg me if you need any other information. :)  Happy Holidays to all!
