New Jersey - New York Marriages 1900-1930
« on: Tuesday 22 October 13 12:41 BST (UK) »
Following an earlier post I'm just wondering if anyone can come up with marriage details for these marriages -

Edward H Werder to Alice ****? who was born 1908, New York
son born 1934 so the marriage will be 1933-34?

William C Werder to Christina A *****? who was born 1889 in Germany
son born 1906 so the marriage will be 1904-05?

There may not be a marriage for the next because the groom was seperated but not divorced

William C Werder to Genevie who was also born Germany 1889
daughter born 1930 so there may be a marriage 1928-29?

If the above couple were living together in 1930 they seem to avoid the census, possibly for obvious reasons, but they appear together in the 1940 census.

Their daughter has the unusual name of (*) born 1930
Can anyone find out anything about (*), she is a complete unknown.

Thanks again for any help.  I think this may be a case of having somebody on the ground to the records office and search.

Just to clarify so people don't have to search -

Edward Werder & Alice were together in Jersey City, NJ in the 1940 census.

William Werder & Christina are on the 1910 census in Jersey City, which states that they had been married for 4 years.

William Werder & Genieve are on the 1940 census in Jersey City, which says they were living in the same place in 1935.

Is there anything that makes you think they married in New York rather than New Jersey?

Shelley I was going to just ask for New Jersey marriages but overall with this family, apart from those born outside the US, births seem to be New york if not New Jersey, Jersey City more often than not.

It's a pity there isn't a US equvalent to the UK's FreeBMD and National Records Office, a big undertaking should anyone try to set something like it up in the US.  You'll know far better than me, but it seems each State had it's own system and priorities.  Census and Military details provide good research, but with millions of people flooding into the country and the vast area these people could melt away into, it was going to be difficult to keep records of everything and everyone.  And the language barrier for so many, plus the name changes to make foriegn names sound more american.

This board has been extremely helpful to me in recent years.  By the way I've searched using Ancestry and come up with nothing for the marriages so asking here is a last try.  cheers Fred

Location:Jersey City, New Jersey

Not going to happen - vital records are kept by the individual states.  The country is a federation of semi-independent states, many of which are much larger than Great Britain.

Hi RCB,

I may have information on
(*)... I believe if we are talking about the right person, she is my Grandmother.

Here is some information I've been told by family members:

My great-grandmother, Genevieve, married her first husband Stephen Zahray sometime between 1915-1920 and lived in Jersey City.  They had
(*) on June 6, 1930... unfortunately, Stephen Zahray, died just 6 months after
(*) was born.

The only information I could find on Genevieve &
(*) after the 1930's was that they were living with William C Werder in the 1940 census.  Not sure if they eventually married or not, but they were listed as Genevieve &
(*) Werder.

Now this is where I'm a little lost.  I cannot find any birth records on
(*) with the last name Zahray or Werder... and now that you mention Hansen, I'm wondering where you found this last name.  Perhaps there are simply 2
(*)that we are searching for, but it seems unlikely given the unusual first name. :)  Can you please share how you came across the
(*) Hansen?
