International Red Cross
« on: Monday 21 October 13 16:10 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I put in a request to the International Red Cross a year ago about 2 POWs. I received a letter today and they have asked for 100 swiss francs per request and my credit card details to be sent either by post, or to send them via an email address they provided in the letter, if I want the search to go ahead.

Has anybody requested POW records from the international red cross and when you requested the search did they ask for payment the same way?

The ICRC Website states as follows:
Research conducted free of charge
Research is carried out free of charge when it has been requested by the individual concerned himself/herself or by his/her next of kin (brother, sister, wife, husband, father, mother, children, grand-children).

Paid research:

In all cases other than the above, a fee of 100 Swiss francs is charged per research. When your case is dealt with you will receive an e-mail setting out the procedure for payment

The first you named in your P.M.

Captured 22nd June and as you stated, at Tobruk.
POW N/Africa.
Shipped out on the 16/8/1942 for Italy. Port of departure would have been Benghazi and, the ship probably the Sestriere or Nino Bixio as they both sailed with POW on that date.                        Most likely from the date given for PG 60 he would have been aboard the Sestriere as the Nino Bixio was torpedoed and then towed to Greece

PG 60 Lucca until 10/12/1942 --- PG 53 Macerata until 8/4/1943. --- PG 133/15 Vespolate Work Camp Farming until Capitulation of 8/9/1943.
Arrived in Switzerland 10 days later.

My experience is that in many cases the information regarding a former POW is much more complete if available at Kew.

This should be the first place to look.
