The Christian Name "Fasho"
« on: Sunday 20 October 13 11:57 BST (UK) »
I have an ancestor whose Christian Name was "Fasho".Does anyone have any idea where that name would have come from ? To me it sounds a bit French. It is so unusual.(When you Google it doesn't come up in any old books...)The rest of the Family (surname Lean of Wilton,Wiltshire) had pretty normal names. Could it have been a nickname or shortversion of a longer name ?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks !

You don't give any dates, but . . . .

Have you looked at all censuses?
What name does he give on Marriage or Birth/Baptism entries?

EDIT: the 1841 census does indeed look like Tasho!
Reference is Class:  HO107; Piece:  1167; Book:  15; Folio:  49; Page:  15
2nd name, right-hand-column.

Aged 60 on that census, so born between 1776-1781 (as 1841 rounds ages down to a multiple of 5 years)

You beat me to it! I was just typing about a time frame.  :)
The name rings a vague bell, with someone of note from the 19th century, maybe Victorian era?
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

Deaths Sep 1847
LANE  Fasho
Wilton 8 293

She was the wife of Henry LEAN/LANE - there are births for two of their children on FamilySearch.  I think this might be her baptism:

Fasho HOPKINS, daughter of Thomas HOPKINS and Mary, chr. 23 March 1781, St Mary, Wilton.
ANT: Nesbit, Potts; CHS: Gosling (Hazel Grove/Lymm), Hinton (Lymm), Johnson (Hazel Grove), Marsland (Hazel Grove), Massey (Daresbury), Sorton (Warmingham); LAN: Jackson, James, Potts (Manchester/Salford); MAY: Caulfield, Griffin (Leveelick); SAL: Goodwin, Johnson (Bridgnorth), Gregory (Wellington); STS: Goodwin, Gregory, Johnson (Wolverhampton); Hallett (Trysull); SOM: Dowding, James, Jones (Bath)

Family Search has a child born to Henry and Fasho Lane and also a baptism of Fasho Hopkins in 1781 which could be her.
Most other similar names seem to be mistranscriptions etc.

In duplicate!

Thanks to all who tried to help with Fasho Lean.I already had when and where she was baptized and died etc.The Name Fasho was the Problem I just wanted to know where it originated from because it is so unusual and it might indicate something about the Families roots. The other idea, apart from French was that is was somehow Irish...

Kept searching and have now probably found the answer.Probably derives from Fasham, which was a Hugenot surname.Recorded in a wide variety of spellings including Fassan, Fasson, Fashin, Fashion, and Fazan.
Also noticed that the Duchess of Devonshire,Georgiana had a daughter with the Christian Name Harriet bn 1785 but she called her Harryo which was around the same time as Fasho was born-so may have been the thing to do.
