I enjoyed school dinners, but then my mum's cooking skills left much to be desired, though she did try.

California Syrup of Figs an a Friday night - to clear you out- then going to bed knowing that you would spend a lot of Saturday running to the loo.  My mother was a dressmaker and she used the off cuts of paper dressmaking patterns as loo paper also used was the thin paper which our baker wrapped the bread in. At least they were softer than Bronco.

My mother  made my brother and I wear kilts when we went to fetes and weddings etc  up till I was about eight and rebelled against this. On more than one occasion we appeared in local papers, I still have not found any Scots in my ancestors why were we put through this. :(

Possibly because she liked the tartans invented by the English Victorians rather than traditional Scottish plaid (belted plaid) which was worn as a wrap around the body and over the shoulder. ;)

As a left hander being made to sew using the right hand and wear a thimble. My teacher used to call out "right hands up" just to check we had the thimble on. She also used to check on hems to make sure were had used the right hand.

I soon learned to keep the thimble on my right hand and when sewing a hem turned the item upside down so my stitches seemed to be done with the right hand.

How about the smell of kippers frying - I have never tasted them as I could not stand the smell.  Also daily spoonful of malt extract - yuk!

Linda

This reminded me about visiting my grandparents as a child. They still had a "thunderbox" (aka "the outside dunny") out the back and we had to use old telephone books hung on string as toilet paper. And throw in a handful of sawdust when you were finished. I think they finally got sewerage in the late 1970's. And this was in Brisbane! (Capital of the state of Queensland in Australia). It was always an adventure to visit the loo at night with a torch - keeping an eye out for the spiders. :) It wasn't the worst thing I had to endure as a child but your post sure brought back memories.  ;D
