We were happy, we could manage and adapt and make do and mend. We were all in the same boat as you say, it must be a bit easier when you are not struggling in isolation.
My grandson stayed with us recently for a few weeks due to work circumstances. I had a whale of a time mending his work trousers and darning his work socks. I like darning. He was so interested and pleased .He`s known me knit and sew for him from being a little boy .I`m sure my daughter just chucks things away.
Coats etc were re-cycled for other garments and then ended up as hearth rugs, but I know one person who said the rug was first used on the bed if the weather was particularly cold, before being put down in front of the fire. These rugs went through a revival and were seen as the latest "must have " in trendy kitchens fairly recently. You can con some people really easily can`t you!
Despite lots of wonderful things which make life easier today, I still feel my generation had something good which has gone and won`t ever come back.
In the words of the song :-" I`m glad I`m not young anymore". Viktoria.
