Being an only child.
My parents were older than those of my contemporaries. They were very old fashioned.I wish there had been 2 of us, it would have taken some of the heat off me!
I was force fed cod liver oil on the same silver, unwashed, spoon every day. ???
I hated the third of a pint of milk we had in the summer. It was disgusting. I can't drink hot/warm milk to this day!
Also, at grammar school, I had a maths teacher called Miss Louisa. I had always done well at arithmetic, but algebra had me flummoxed. She did not explain it to me properly. When it came to test results she informed us that usually she started at the top, but on this occasion she wanted to start at the bottom. Guess who was at the bottom? :o She was positively gleeful. Scarred me for life!

When I  look at family photographs of my childhood -  I seem to be always smiling or laughing or even playing the fool..
I can't think why, cos on reflection it was pretty awful.  Mother too 'in love' with new boyfriend to want my sister and I hanging around.   So we were given to an Aunt and Uncle - whilst she sorted herself out.  However the wonderful time spent with that special couple must be the reason for the smiles.

So Nurture or Nature   -  uhm

I loved Malt (but not Virol) Marmite yummy.  Condensed milk out of the tin fantastic.

I wasn't good at school I hated it so much - that at lunch times I would tip up the salt pot and swallow as much as I could to make myself sick and then I was sent home!!!!  I told my Aunt this years later and she was so sad for me.
One particular teacher had it in for me (theres always one) MRS BURGIN shout it from the roof tops - I have never and will never forgive her.   My Pops was away at Sea (in the Navy) but one day he was waiting at the school gate for my sister and I... so wonderful to see him and so unexpected a very happy day.   He went in to school and sorted her out.  She was never mean to me again.  :)
Yet he was such a gentle man.  How he did it I dont know.

I think malt extract is different from Marmite, which is yeast extract.  Both delicious anyway!  I still love marmite on toast, and would like to have malt extract again now - lovely sweet sticky stuff!  Cod liver oil wasn't so good, though!  Someone mentioned condensed milk, too, wonderful stuff, I used to eat it from the tin, and also spread on bread.

Didn't enjoy the cold of those days, again as mentioned before it was awful having ice on the inside of windows!

Glad I didn't suffer bullying like some posters, I remember my childhood as happy, despite the war and the shortages etc afterwards.

Hi,

The smell of liver & bacon cooking at home & kippers, still makes me feel sick now.
