There is only one J McCune on the medal roll for WW1, and he was a stoker in the RNR. His service record can be downloaded for £3.36.

There is also a RN service record for a John McCune, possibly the father? Unfortunately neither is likely to contain any family information.

John Stephen McCune was orphaned when he was young.  He died in 1956 in Fremantle, Western Australia.  This is why his parents weren't in the 1911 census.  Only Bernard Joseph McCune is still alive.

John Stephen McCune was actually born in Belfast (not Dublin) on 26/12/1895.  His mother died when he was 6 months old of dropsy and his father also died when he was very young. (I don't know when.) John moved to Dublin when he was three years old and lived with his godmother.  John was the youngest child. He had four sisters and a brother- Nelly, Susan, Maggie, Annie and Robert who were brought up in Catholic orphanages in Northern Ireland.  Robert died in WW1 from injuries at the Battle of Somme in France.  Does any body know what happened to his mother, father and sisters or where the family is now?  Thank you.

Hi Jeune, I'm writing as I'm related to you in some way I believe. John Aloysius McCune was my grandfather as he adopted 3 sons Kevin George, Darrell Arthur and Malcolm Ian Bloomer belonging to my grandmother Dorothy Florence May Mullenger.  I'm Kevin's daughter, born in 1978. Sadly I can't help you with any new leads as I'm fairly new to the family, having grown up with my mother, and was estranged from my father (long story). However, I love family history so the information in your post I found very interesting. Would love to hear from you as wasn't aware of any family living in Brisbane. I'm from Perth. natalieann1978@westnet.com.au Cheers, Natalie :-)

Based on ausie's information that John Stephen MC CUNE was born in Belfast in Dec 1895 the following maybe of interest to you all

Link to civil reference for Marriage of John M’CUNE to Jane M’NALLY in 1885
From a paid site that you can search you will find the family births as
1886 Ellen
1888 Annie
1889 Susan
1891 Margaret
1893 Robert
1895 John - Civil Birth Reference Belfast Oct-Dec 1895 Volume 1 Page 164

There is a death of a Jane M’CUNE aged 38 in Belfast Apr-Jun 1896 Volume 1 Page 125
which all ties in

There is no obvious 1901 census entry for John in Dublin with his godmother
If you know her name you may be able to locate him
Kearney & Bourke/ Johns & Fox/ Mannion & Finan/ Donohoe & Curley

Hi Jeune,
We live in Perth. John McCune was my husbands uncle. His mother was Maureen Ptricia McCune. Anderson was her married name. Are you a member of the family.
